I think personally that horror books are far more scary than any film could ever be.

 

Your imagination is always going to be better than £1BN worth of special effects.

 

Certain writers given their style I think as well hold your interest and get you thinking more than others - I'd say Stephen King falls into this category with his imaginitve writing - not to mention (Possibly Suprisingly) H.P. Lovecraft - where some of the horror comes from his writing from the 1920s - which makes it seem even more slightly strange.
