82pts would've been enough to secure 2nd place in 7 of the Premiership years and enough to have won it on 4 occasions.

 

This has been a massively improved season, and if we'd beaten Chelsea in both league encounters between us we'd have won the league. Yeah I know 'ifs and buts' but it's significant and shows just how close the gap has become.

A great achievement and just shows how wrong the world of football is with Chelsea and their 'bought' title.

 

Also gotta respect the Mancs for their total. I've been predicting their demise for years and slagging them off all this season. For them to finish 2nd with a tally huge enough to usually win it despite their personnel difficulties.... well, it's fearsome for next season.

We need to start taking more points off the big boys then we'll have every chance. The points bar has been raised in recent seasons - a good thing - and we've had to improve our consistancy.

It's going to be intresting next season.

Comparing points totals across seasons is of limited value.

 

We were comprehensively beaten by Chelsea in both fixtures and if they had needed to win their last 2 games you suspect the results would probably have been different.

 

However leaving all of that aside we are definately improving and I am looking forward to some good summer purchases and to next season.

 

Let us not kid ourselves though, Chelsea, the Mancs and Arsenal will also be stronger next year, and talk of the title is still a bit optimistic for me.

aye thats very true. With that early start and extra games with the Super cup and the trip to Japan, there was a bit of talk that maybe we'd run out of gas.

 

Credit to Pako, and to Rafa for the way he's used the squad! The team has been looking fresher and fitter these last few weeks, than other teams who've had far less games to play.

I think the fact we're only 9 from top this season is very significant when you look at the gap in recent years.

even when it was a 42 game season there is only one occasion when the third placed team got more then 82 points. West Ham in 86 got 84 points.
