Johnny Red Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 If Arsenal win the CL would that mean they automatically qualify for next seasons comp? Does that also mean that even if we finish 2nd in the Premiership, we would be moved down to 3rd place because Arsenal are defending champs?
Ramón Benítez Hernández Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Common sense says that Arsenal winning the European Cup will have no bearing on our position in the league. I assume Spurs will lose their spot to Arsenal.
_00_deathscar Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 They automatically qualify. So does 2nd place. Celtic are the ones who get f***ed over. Therefore, the only team in England that has to go through the qualify round is 3rd place.
Guest AnfieldGrass Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Arsenal have to win the final first. Can't see it happening myself (you'd never hear the end of it from Wenger), they're no Liverpool.
Guest Kallib Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 If Arsenal win CL they replace the 4th place team and have to go through the qualifying rounds as 4th place would have done.
Guest Kev Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 I was told that if Arsenal win the CL then 2nd and 3rd place have to qualify. Can't say if it's gen or not.
Guest Jack Bauer Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 That'd be a bit crap, what about the financial situation? Will Arsenal get the most money? We got the least last year when we won it.

I heard an interview on the radio here in Iceland with the Icelandic Football Association president, who also is in the UEFA Executive Committee and he said if Arsenal go on and win CL but dont reach 4th place in the Premier League they will go into next years competition as the 4th placed team. I guess that means they recieve the least ammount of money and have to play qualifying matches to get to the group stages. He also said that UEFA thinks that 4 teams from a big country like England is enough and UEFA will not be adding more matches to next years CL season like the G14 clubs wanted. hope i understood the man right

Only the 3rd placed team will play qualifying matches. The top two sides in the Premier League qualify automatically for the UEFA Champions League, going straight through to the group stage. The teams that finish third and fourth qualify for the UEFA Champions League but must play in the 3rd qualifying round - the winners of these matches are then admitted to the group stage. If Arsenal win the Champions League, they will automatically qualify for the Champions League at the group stage along with the Clubs finishing in first and second place in the Premier League. If Arsenal are placed in the top four of the Premier League table and win the Champions League, they will qualify for the Champions League by virtue of their position on the League table (and would enter the competition at the group stage regardless of their position within the top four). If Arsenal are placed outside the top four of the Premier League table and win the Champions League, they would qualify for the Champions League by virtue of their Champion's League title and would enter the competition at the group stage. The third-placed team would still go into the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League and the fourth-placed team would drop into the UEFA Cup Edited May 6, 2006 by rookie
abc Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Unless the rules changed (which they did, sorta), the champions and the top two teams will go straight into the group stages. That's what happened in 2001, IIRC. Looked it up last year when we were all wondering if we'd be in the competition.

Guest timb Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 mooks said: You gotta love people talking so definitively when they obviously haven't got a clue ... definitively aside, I seem to remember last year that 1st and 2nd place in the league qualify automatically for the group stage UNLESS: 1) the CL champions are from that particular country AND 2) they finish outside the top two. In which case, 1st place and the CL champions go straight to the group stage, with 2nd and 3rd place having to qualify. The reason this didn't apply to us last year, was because UEFA changed the rules to allow us to compete.
Guest Red Mist Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 (edited) If Arsenal win the CL and finish 5th, they should be the ones going through the whole qualifying process - right from the beginning - as we did this season. Let them reach the CL proper the hard way. Or easy way, as it proved for us. Edited May 7, 2006 by Red Mist
Scally Bob Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 One very positive thing about all this has been the Evertonians' dignity surrounding it all. They really seem to have matured. Last season all we heard was it was all our fault and County Road would be burning and everything. This season not even any complaints about having to share out the CL money. Well done Bitters everywhere!
