Should the away goals rule be scraped ?

Watching the play-offs and the away goals do not count double in the semi-finals.

So it got me thinking, would European competitions be better off if they followed suit ?

I think its a f***ing s***ty ruling myself, you can go out of a competition despite losing neither game just because a team scored a goal at your ground, it's odd. At least penno's get a proper winner. It'd change the way a lot of teams play in Europe though, think a lot of teams would all be delighted with 0-0s in their home legs in the hope they can get an away goal and defend it that would change.

I agree with that point, but say for instance you are 4-1 down from the first leg, shouldn't a 3-0 win give you that reward ?

I do agree that it's a bad rule, I'm just playing devil's advocate.

Oh definately and if the away goals rule was scrapped and we done that next season i'd be begging for it to come back. In reality though I think it should be gotten rid of because it's ridiculous a team can go out despite not losing a game.

I'd keep the rule myself but I'm to tired to explain why, maybe tomorrow.

Away goals should be 'scraped', ideally in a goalmouth scramble - its much more exciting that way.

It was a big ol achievement to score in the away behind the Iron Curtain in the olden days I guess. But its still quite an achievement and draws the away side into trying to get something even if 3 or 4 down.

We have the penalty shoot out rule though and thats at the end of a draw.

And if you had pens in the second leg that would give the home team an automatic advantage. Replays can't go on and on these days either.

I don't think so. 4-1 and 0-3 evens out to 4-4. You haven't scored more than the other team over the 2 legs so why do you deserve to go through? Alright, you'd be a bit gutted because it would have to be an incredible comeback, but you'd go into the game knowing that you'd have to score at least 4 to go through directly anyway. You'd probably just be thrilled to still have a chance at going through after beating 4-1 down from the first leg!

Doesn't the rule only exist to stop boring football, or something like that? I heard that it was so away teams would come out and attack teams a bit, looking for the away goal. The thing is, now the home teams won't attack as much for fear of conceding one, and to be honest, not all that many teams are all too bothered about looking for one in an away game.

I'd much rather see a good old fashioned attack vs defence match if I had the choice, with the home team actually looking to win the match and make advantage of being on home soil. You might even get (away) teams trying to counteract it by doing some attacking of their own ...
