dorgie Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) sorry.....Thread Title should have read "won" instead of "one".....I'm annoyed Linky http://www.premierleague.com/fapl.rac?comm...stfa_breadcrumb This is a disaster for the consumer as one will have to subscribe to SKY & Setanta now to see the same amount of games as one can see now. I understand that PremPlus will be a thing of the past as part of these deals. The EU should go & f**k themselves as they have made a right c**k-up of this. Apparantly this deal is for UK only and a different agreement will have to be reached for Ireland. Edited May 5, 2006 by dorgie
Guest roger Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 They've got rid of the monopoly but have hardly improved the situation for the viewer.
dorgie Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 They've got rid of the monopoly but have hardly improved the situation for the viewer. Exactly. So the only beneficiaries are 1 big company over a massive company....and the consumer can go screw themselves.
Earl Hafler Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 This has been coming since November http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4444684.stm Depends how Setanta package their coverage. A full PremPlus season ticket was something like 60 quid, wasn't it ?
Gomez Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Also, there is nothing to stop Sentana from selling their rights to Sky.So the point of all this was...?
dorgie Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 The TV rights generated £1.7bn ($3.1bn) for the Premier League, with Sky paying £1.3bn and Setanta £392m. In the auction each rights package was divided into 23 games and the Commission wanted at least two broadcasters to have a "viable and meaningful" share So SKY get 92 games for £1.3bn and Setanta get 46 games for £392m. W.T.F., Setanta get half as many games for a quarter of the price I can only assume that SKY will get ALL of the big games based on those calculations.
Guest roger Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Setanta Sport Holdings Ltd ("Setanta Sports"), the leading international sports broadcaster, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Package C and Package D today by the FA Premier League. These packages represent a total of 46 games. Package C consists of a minimum of 12 matches at 8pm Mondays, the rest either will be broadcast at 1.30pm on Sunday or 5.15pm on Saturday. Package D consists of a minimum of 18 matches at 5.15pm on Saturdays and the rest either at 1.30pm on Sunday or 8pm on Monday. The rights run for three seasons, commencing August 2007. Setanta
DanielS Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 So SKY get 92 games for £1.3bn and Setanta get 46 games for £392m. W.T.F., Setanta get half as many games for a quarter of the price I can only assume that SKY will get ALL of the big games based on those calculations. It is over three seasons so sky got 270+ games. They got all of the main packages for the Sunday, early Saturday and Bank holiday / weekday matches. I am absolutely livid (as a cut snake) about this. The EU has guaranteed that the consumer will lose out as Sky and Setanta will be putting their hand in our pocket to pay for this massive increase in costs. Stupid f***ing beauracratic w*****s.
hagi_complex Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Not surprised about this at all. I had some dealings with Setanta just over a year ago and this was part of their business plan. They let it be known that they were going to be aggressively chasing the rights. Even if they're 'lower tier games', we're bound to be involved in some and it ain't gonna be cheap It'll be interesting to see how this affects their deal with NTL in Ireland, where the Irish version of the channel (incl. Saturday 3pm games) is part of the basic package for NTL customers. If you have Sky, a years subscription is something like ?150.
Jacko Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I don't think Setanta have any "first choice" games as part of the packages they've won. Whilst I'm sure we the consumers will end up paying more it is worth remembering that the clubs will be getting significantly more money from this deal than the current deal.
hagi_complex Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Whilst I'm sure we the consumers will end up paying more it is worth remembering that the clubs will be getting significantly more money from this deal than the current deal. That's a relief. They certainly need it more than we do.
Swipe Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 How come, if Sky have won fewer packages this time, are they able to show more matches than they have done this season (thats what SSN are saying) They showed 88 this sesaon and this new deal guarentees them 92. how does that work?
Guest roger Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 How come, if Sky have won fewer packages this time, are they able to show more matches than they have done this season (thats what SSN are saying) They showed 88 this sesaon and this new deal guarentees them 92. how does that work? They have lost tho the equivalent of the 40 (or is 50) Prem Plus games.
Swipe Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 They have lost tho the equivalent of the 40 (or is 50) Prem Plus games. Ah right. So basically Setanta just have, what where the Prem Plus games?

I am lucky enough that I can probably afford it, but you have to draw the line somewhere, and this would probably be it for me. Think I will just go the pub for those matches, or listen online. How would it affect the highlights if sky no longer own all the matches? Is the highlights a completely different package.
Guest roger Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Ah right. So basically Setanta just have, what where the Prem Plus games? Simplistically I suppose yes- in approximate number. But I dont know the fine print of who chooses what games. And who has first pick as I havn't read up on it. Reading v Portsmouth probably wont be on Sky tho.
IgPig Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Betcha some of the Sky games are still packaged as prem plus. You'll then have £30/40 a month for sky1 &2 etc, £60 a year for prem plus, and whatever setanta charge. I usually get the full monty with prem plus season ticket. looks like I'll just pay per match beyond the normal sky package from now on. Getting silly this. What do Setanta charge for the old firm games atm? fookin armchair fans Sky win anyway, cos in most cases people who don't have setanta will get sky if they want to see it. Guest roger Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 The 92 Sky matches are all on the regular channels and not the PPV. The 4pm sunday slot enables them to have first choice of the weekend fixtures 23 times. It gets a bit complicated tho when, say, the Liverpool v Mancs match is on because the Police wouldn't allow that match to be played at that time. Maybe Sky will have to sit around the table with Trevor East and thrash sommat out?
BDB Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 How did Setanta get so big, I've been in the states since 94, and only in 97 I think did they start charging $10 per match to watch in a bar. It's 15 or 20 now, but they have a channel on directv. Did they get bought out by someone bigger, what I remeber was a chap called shane o rourke running it. Liverpool fan he was/is.
Benitez Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I've got Setanta Sports Pack right now, you get - Setanta 1 and Setanta 2, Setanta Ireland, NASN, NASN Xtra and crappy fecin Celtic and Rangers tv I didn't actually want Setanta Sports Pack, but I'd been subscribing to NASN since it started, and they decided to change all NASN subscribers packages to this 'Sports Pack', without even asking! Cheeky buggers. So it was take it or leave it, and as I watch NASN more than any other channel, i'll take it. Setanta 1 and 2 are ok actually, so long as I avoid the Scottish footy. They show Bundesliga, French footy and Dutch league games as well as SPL and Serie A, it makes a change from Premiership! IF Setanta basically add to this Sports Pack with their new prem rights games, then I'd not be bothered, I'd just dump Sky Sports and stick with Setanta. I've been thinking of dumping Sky Sports anyway, cos I watch so much NASN, and now watch a bit of the live footy games on Setanta as well, and it's pretty good.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 The record total for the three-year contract to run from the start of the 2007-08 season will mean a windfall for players and a transfer market boom. However Sky Sports subscribers expressed concern yesterday that viewers will foot the bill. A spokesman for the British Beer and Pub Association, which has led a long campaign against Sky's charges for pub subscriptions, said the lobby group was worried that "consumers will end up paying".He said: "Clearly there is an underlying concern that prices to consumers and pubs will rise as a result of this."Oh fecking great. Just like that's what we need
fyds Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Sky are currently advertising 93 matches on their regular Sky Sorts Channels AND 50 matches on Prem Plus for £50. Have Setanta not got some of the coverage that Sky had, or have they simply got 46 odd matches that Sky never had and didn't want?
Guest Jack Bauer Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 This is crap. I'd rather Sky have all them. Oh well, I'll just go the pub.
Maldini Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Can't see how it's any different to the current set up, instead of paying for Prem Plus you'll now be paying for Setanta.
hagi_complex Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Can't see how it's any different to the current set up, instead of paying for Prem Plus you'll now be paying for Setanta. But Sky already have ads for next season's Prem Plus (50 games), so you'll have to pay for both if you want to see all the games. I don't see any price reductions, save for the usual special offers.
