Roadworks on the M1 and demolition work in south Belfast are being blamed by residents for an upsurge in the number of rats invading property. Belfast City Council has had its largest number of complaints about rats in more than three decades.

Ulster Unionist councillor Bob Stoker said residents wanted the rats cleared out of the area before the rest of the work on the Westlink begins.

"We're talking about putting contraceptives in the sewers to stop them breeding, those who miss being culled, and (DoE) Roads Service and the contractor are not taking these suggestions seriously," he said.
