Latest Tomkins Article Here

Am I the only one who can't remember the last time Tomkins had an article that didn't include comments along the lines of "Ten months ago I predicted ________", or "Earlier this season I said _______________" and then go on to prove himself right?

My ex-girlfriend was a lot like that. :redcard:

Be thankful we have the likes of Paul writing quality articles and books about our beloved reds (and football in general, any fan can appreciate Paul's stuff). Or do you prefer the usual dross the tabloids spit out, lazy journalism, spreading rubbish rumours, cheap shots at us all the time, trying to create something from nothing and not checking facts?

I think that a common misconception people have in this forum is that all pro-lfc articles are good.

I disagree...we can have bad journalism here as well and i do get the feeling sometimes that Paul Tomkins is guilty of that...I mean some (not all as some are really good) articles he writes are so generic that I could have written them. I always thought that to be a journalist you have to have a bit more than basic written English. I might be wrong.

Why don't you try writing them then we can judge you?

pay me...

People are usually paid for producing something of value. If you can produce something that is valuable I am sure someone will pay you. Until then I will continue to believe you have no chance in hell of writing anything worth more than the series of tiny magnetic switches on the hard drive that stores your words.

i am not going to argue with the above as is possibly true...

but i am going to say that you are guilty of praising Paul Tomkins because he rarely has anything bad to say about LFC....we are not a perfect club....a great club but by no means perfect...and things are in not all tra la la la la fairyland good...

If you want to read bad things about us then pick up any newspaper after we have won and see how they have spun it into a 'lucky' win. Alonso's passes become a 'lucky punt' or a Garcia scorcher becomes a miss hit.

Give me Paul who writes what the fans are thinking but puts it a little better.

A little envy me thinks.

I have his book and he does make some good points but after a while his writing style really grates.

I couldn't finish it.

I'm sure he's a nice bloke and top red but that photo he uses does himself few favours.

Paul not always been full of praise when it comes to LFC, like most fans he complained in his articles about the direction that Liverpool were going, and he wasn't afraid to point out Gerrards failings as a player, person and most importantly a captain.

The fact that Paul has been praising the s*** out of us so much lately has more to do with the fact that all is well at the moment, and the people that watch the Reds the most know it. Paul is just our voice, and almost everything he has written in the past has been something i was thinking or was going to write in a thread.

I can't read his stuff.

I can't anymore either. Got fed up of the towing the party line angle and the repetitive nature of his stuff. It's overkill.

And that's been constructive - we are allowed to say why we don't like reading certain writers articles without being told to 'write ourselves then' aren't we?!

And yes, he needs to change that picture

I don't know why I am bothering to respond to the rubbish you post but I have a spare minute, and I won't even charge you for my time.

I did not once say that I praise Paul's writing unreservedly (not that I think there's anything wrong with a fan writing positive things about the club), I simply said we should be grateful we have such people. If you don't like his stuff don't read it. If you think you can do better (or even as well - as you claimed) then go ahead and allow us to appreciate it also. In the meantime some of us are smart enough to read in a critical fashion (I am using the word critical in it's purest academic meaning) and get something out of it, even though we may not agree with, or appreciate, it all the time.

As far as fairyland goes, you seem to be an authority on the matter so I shall leave you to it.

Be thankful for one-dimensional self congratulatory articles?

And stop this us against the world press attitude. There is serious paranoia among liverpool fans over press coverage. Get over it. And this "lazy journalism" tag is b0ll0cks. that Tomkins article is as lazy as it gets. Its no more insightful than some of the more thoughtful posts that appear on forums

Insight is one thing. An ability to articulate is another.

I'll agree to disagree Grass but my opinion is that everything he writes is very average.

Naturally I am sure he is a top bloke and true Red, and therefore I wish him well. I just don't have time for his column because it offers very little.

And I have never read any evidence to support the assertion that he articulates his points of view any better than the average mortal.

fair play there....but i do think i have a right to think that he is quite ordinary....

It's just a collection of thoughts expressed on here many times before....

He plagerised the forum.... He owes us £5

Yes we will have to agree to disagree. Maybe you are put off by his style, which I can understand, but he puts a lot of effort and thought in his stuff and I find a lot of it well formulated and generally insightfull, and usually written from a fan's perspective who seems to be going through the ups and downs with us. It's not my place to publicly criticise someone's chosen career if I am not a specialist in that field (the opening post was simply a cheap shot, not an ounce of constructive criticism), especially if I think that in general they are doing a good job. Privately I have thoughts about some of Tomkins' writing, but I prefer to remain appreciative in public.

Yes but you also have the gift of reason. Use it. ;)

I am put off by his style, but am sure he puts alot of effort in to what he does. The fact that it is a fans perspective is another thing that puts me off. I have people at home and on forums and in work who are going through the ups and downs with me.

on your second point, if your chosen career is to publicly express your opinions on any matter, then you are going to face criticism from those who disagree with you or who are not particularly enamoured with how you do your job.
