I personally believe that Rooney has faked the injury. Bold statement yes, but I don't think he can handle all the pressure being placed on him. Look at the reaction the media and players too after his injury... instantly england went from having a good chance of winning it to the 'How are we gonna manage now? what'll we do?' stance....

I really don't think there is anything wrong with him, he's just not ready yet I guess.

Had crossed my mind, but more in a returning to squad on the eve of the world cup, national hero, what a guy, let's use him in our next advertising campaign, move over Beckham sort of way....but more likely a devious plot hatched by the auld enemy in the shape of ferguson. Using his jock medical staff to tell wayney that he can't go to the world cup cos his foot is broken when really it is just a bit of bruising. The result being that England can't possibly win the world cup without wayney (see hysterical media coverage for details) and the glams have him all fit and rested at the start of next season....or something...

And of course there's nothing better to help sales of your official biography, being released in mid July, and which your publisher has spent millions of pounds on, than having watched the most important football event of your life sat on your 'arris eating KFC.

Have you got a Google Video to back you up?

I think this could be partly correct. He's obviously faked injury so England's World Cup winning odds lengthen and he can put twelvty million pounds on them to win it at vast odds only for him to make a miraculous recovery in time to lead England to World Cup glory and therefore recover all the debt he has accrued. It's the classic sign of someone with a gambling problem betting big to recover their losses.

Micky Owen and John Terry are probably in on it as well!

OMG i hope Ashton and Etherington are really injured!

News today is that he has more than one fracture and in no way will make it to the WC.

Well if they keep adding breaks to this fake story, people will be less inclined to fall for it.

I don't think he's faked it, but I though it was bizarre that:

1) he was holding his ankle not his foot when he went down

2) he clearly gave himself at least one kick forward* to increase his roll distance (presumably so as to make sure he was in the penalty area)

* come to think of it, perhaps it was that kick forward that broke the metatarsal - guffaw!

yeah, but this way he can spend more time in the TV studio and play John Parrott to Trevor Brooking's Steve Davis.
