Italian media is reporting that Barcelona have halted talks with Liverpool over the transfer of Giuly from the Catalan club to Merseyside. Talks were believed to be underway but the good performances Giuly has put in of late has seen Barcelona have a change of heart and they are now seemingly going to offer the French player a new contract at the end of the season.

Have they reminded him that he still won't be in the first team when Goofy, Messi and Deco are all fit?

It's in his best interests to leave, simple as that. And now, while he is young enough and sharp enough to make a difference somewhere else.

According to Barca (rather than the Italian media) they still haven't received an offer from the club.

he's 30 in July.

Makelele was the same age when Chelsea signed him, still playing great now at 33. It's not about being able to run aroung all day, it's about making the right runs.

Giulys game is based on sharpness and pace. On the whole right wingers finish their peak a lot younger than defensive midfielders do.

Shearer? Speed? Giggs? Stelios?

One player could be at his peak at 28, and another could reach that at 32. It is not that cut and dry. And his age would kjeep teh cost down, so less risk.

Even two really good seasons would be worth it...
