Solution to overcrowded prisons, without resorting to capital punishment

In another thread I've contradicted my liberal, humanist disposition by championing the death penalty. I've thought about this and have found a better solution - one that will solve the problem of crowded prisons and the need to rehabilitate offenders without ever releasing them back into civilised society.

We simply adopt an old custom of ours, one manifested in the form of Australia ? the penal colony.

We create an artificial island off the coast of Scotland (so if the prisoners escape they can head to Scotland rather than come down here), similar to what the UAE is doing by creating the tropical paradise of Palm Island.

This island will have farms, animals, accommodation and the basic essentials of life. We simply dump all our criminals in this island and let them get on with it. No supervision, no imprisonment, no hope of escape (the island will be surrounded by a 20 ft electric fence that lets out a fatal charge should humans attempt to breach it.)

The crooks can either learn to live as a society and help one another to thrive, or they can all end up killing one another. Either way WE win.
