shaq Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 (edited) I don't see why anyone would restrict themselves only to the players they've seen. The official site says: "we are inviting fans to vote for who they believe to be the ten greatest Liverpool players of all-time"I've not seen Roger Hunt play, but considering he scored 286 goals in 492 games for us, and is our record league goalscorer, it would be a bit difficult to justify putting Emile Heskey (who I have seen play) ahead of Sir Roger in a list of '10 all-time greatest Liverpool players'... For the record -1. Kenny Dalglish2. Ian Rush3. Billy Liddell4. Ray Clemence 5. Roger Hunt6. Graeme Souness7. John Barnes8. Alan Hansen9. Robbie Fowler10. Emlyn Hughes Edited April 19, 2006 by shaq

cochyn Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 The Greats aside, Hyypia's gotta be up there. He shades it over Lawro (for me at least).

Crazy Horse Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 (edited) 10 best I've seen. Probably much the same as everyone else of my age. DalglishBarnes SounessRushHansenNicolFowlerMolbyHyypiaAlonsoOwen By the way...Clemence - he was at Spurs by the time I started watching a lot of football - was he really that good? PS Feck - I picked 11 and still forgot Gerrard and Carra...this game must be so much easier for Everton fans. Edited April 20, 2006 by andrew86
Guest Bernie Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Ten best I've seen since 1983 DalglishRushHansenNicolBarnesGerrardFowlerR JonesHyppiaOwen Not many defenders in my list but since Hansen and Nicol left, I can't remember too many that really impressed me. Of the midfielders I've seen I was tempted to put Whelan in. Didi has played well, but hasn't impresseed me as much as Whelan and McMahon did. It's too early to tell with Alonso. Personally, I think Sissoko will prove to be more important in the the long run. Owen has scored some really important goals and for all the bad press he and McManaman get now, I can't remember too many attacking players over the last 15 years that would displace them in my list of recently effective and exciting players at Anfield.

Superjay Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 (edited) What, no place for Piechnik? I thought that but I said I'd have to stick in one of our all time great keepers, it was gonna be stengaard but i thought that might be unfair cause i'd have to put the ironing board in too. Rory Fitzgerald Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Gary Neville Seriously, the whole stand shakes everytime that ugly b*ll*x gets the ball !
anny road Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Nearly, but not quite... let me get this straight..Phil Neal and Sammy Lee are in your top ten ahead of Souness?
hideNseek Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 So not one person thought this guy is worth a shout? Date of Birth: 25-09-1961 Birthplace: Dublin Debut : 3rd April 1981 v Stoke City (H) Football League Division One: won 3-0 1st team games: 443 1st team goals: 73 Other clubs: Home Farm, Southend United (player and manager), Panionios (manager), Olympiakos Nicosia (manager) International caps while with Liverpool: 51 International goals while with Liverpool: 3 Honours with Liverpool: First Division Championship 1981/82, 1982/83, 1983/84, 1985/86, 1987/88 & 1989/90, FA Cup 1986 & 1989, League/Milk Cup 1982, 1983 & 1984, European Cup 1984, Charity Shield 1982, 1986 (shared), 1988, 1989 & 1990 (shared), Screen Sport Super Cup 1986 PROFILE The gifted successor to Ray Kennedy on the left flank of Liverpool's midfield, Whelan made a massive contribution to the club's majestic triumphs under Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish in the 1980's winning six League title medals, three FA Cup, a European Cup and three Milk Cup medals. A natural footballer, Whelan was signed by Paisley from Home Farm in his native Dublin in October 1979, just after his 18th birthday. He gave a hint of things to come by scoring on his debut against Stoke in April 1981, the first of 73 goals scored for Liverpool in almost 500 senior appearances. He had a talent for scoring spectacular and crucial goals, including a magnificent swerving shot that beat Manchester United at Wembley in the 1983 Milk Cup Final, the year after he scored twice at the same venue in the final of the same competition against Tottenham. As well as fierce shooting power Whelan?s lean build incorporated tigerish tackling ability. Later in his Anfield career he captained Liverpool and switched inside to a central midfield role. Whelan emulated his father, Ronnie senior, by representing the Republic of Ireland, for whom he won 53 caps. He left Anfield in 1994 to manage Southend, followed by a spell in charge of Greek club Panionios and then Olympiakos
hideNseek Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Interesting Ronnie won 13 major honours, while Barnes, Molby, Lee, McMahon btw won only 22.
fred milne Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 So not one person thought this guy is worth a shout?I guess the problem is that there's so many to choose from. I'd certainly put ahead Whelan ahead of the likes of Lee, McMahon and Molby though. DalglishLiddellBarnesKeeganGerrardRushCallaghanClemenceHughesSounessThat's as good a selection as any.
Snookie Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Heighway - the reason i love LFCDalglish - the best player i have ever seen play for LFCRush - The best striker i have seen play in the UKSouness - c*** of the highest order but our c***Hansen - that good he makes me forget about those M&S adsLawerson - with Hansen the best partnership to play in the English gameLiddell - the best player i never sawBarnes - Magical at timesNichol - the perfect team playerAlonso - the only current player who would improve any of the previous great teams
fred milne Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 Take Keegan out and put Ronnie in and it would be the best so far.Whelan is one of my favourites too but you can't take Keegan out.
Billy Dane Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 1. Souness2. Dalglish3. Rush4. Liddell5. Barnes6. Callaghan7. Keegan8. Hansen9. Clemence10. (Sir) Roger Hunt Shame there is no place for Peter Thompson, Peter Beardsley, Tommy Smith, Chris Lawler, Ron Yeats, Steve Gerrard etc etc! very difficult.
