Last season in January Rafa paid 6 million for Morientes. He arrived unfit and clearly not ready to play a full 90 minutes. He flattered to deceive and really had a stop start end to the season with the odd goal or two.

This season he got Fowler on a freebie when we were struggling to score goals. He obviously wasn't match fit and hadn't started an many games this season. Robbie has score 4 goals and had a couple of legitimate ones cancelled out. He has also been very good in his alround game.

Obviously Morientes had a long term contract but was given more time to prove hiomself this season. Many still don't feel like he has lived up to his prior standars and delivered his best. Fowler still seems like he is in the dark over his future despite scoring in his last 4 games and ecplising Morientes's season tally in less than 10 starts.

If you look at the two scenerio's Fowler certainly deserves another year.

I'd be mortified if Robbie wasn't given a new deal, regardless of whether Cisse and Mori go or stay. Crouch and Robbie should be the only strikers of the current crop to be here next season.

They do. At least the thought behind the moves. Sadly Morientes' lack of pace cuts the edge off every attempt.

It should be obvious that Rafa is going to keep him in the squad next season. He's a quality striker, he'll play his heart out for the shirt and he's free.

Rafa would be daft to tell him he's got a contract now because he works better with the carrot dangling infront of him.

Morientes is a different matter altogether. I would sell him, most of us would but it wouldn't surprise me if Rafa kept him and got more out of him next season.

Time to cut Morientes loose, for one reason or another its just not working for him. He never was going to be prolific, but even his support play cant justify another year. I honestly believe it would be better for both Morientes and Liverpool if he were to leave in the summer. Some things just never work out no matter how much you'd hope they would.

As for Fowler, I'd give him a two year contract, he was never quick but he's always had the knack of being in the right place at the right time and its not down to luck. Its a great gift and one that will always be important to us in key games

To me it seems like Morientes is just trying to hard. Instead of just playing this beautiful game we call football it seems like he is always trying to do that little extra and perhaps the biggest problem is that it seems like he's always "thinking" about what he is doing. Playing at this level needs to be natural and basically without "thinking".

Look at Fowler, Alonso etc etc. These are players that at the moment are just doing what "feels" right. Not thinking about how they should do it. Every time Morientes has the ball it seems like he has to think about every step he's making. Which you simply don't have time for at this level and unfortunately is all about confidence.

(hope you know what I mean, if not this posts probably sounds fekking weird :D )

Morientes has amazing ability on the ball. I'm far from being a fan of his, but I love watching him take the ball down and laying it off. However, when he's close to the goal where play is compressed, he doesn't have the physical ability (strength nor pace) to execute his ideas. Shame really.

that's well said mate - part from the striked out bit ;) - and probably sum's it up as best we'll see.. i'm gutted he hasn't really done it as his class is so obvious and i'd really love to see him succeed here as he's a player i've always admired and i was over the moon when we signed him..

I have no problem with Morientes's play at all - I think he holds the ball up well and links well. The scoring will come in time - he just needs to get over the hump - but the one thing that really worries me about him is the lack of pace and urgency.

I know you can't pan someone for lack of pace cause its not something you can learn, but for someone who I would expect to have the nouse and experience to win the first few yards in his head, and be that bit ahead of the game, he is too often second to the ball - I just don't think that even now he has adjusted to the pace and that makes me wonder if he ever now will.

I'll bet you a book of my choice that Fernando Morientes Esq isn't a Liverpool player on September 1st 2006.

within reason - i'll cap it at £30 so you don't ask for the dead sea scrolls or something.

i'll just take the £30 nicker ;)
