Defining a strong league.

Something I've been thinking about for a while, and it was sort of raised in a thread on the LFC page.

 

How do you define a strong league? Is it how many points seperating top and bottom? How many teams challenge for the title? Is there a difference between all the teams being strong and all of them being crap?

 

Personally if there's only say 10 points or so sepereating top and bottom, that doesn't mean all the teams are decent it means none of them are really that great.

Number of teams and their progress in Europe?

 

Premiership teams (Everton aside) have done well in Europe over the last couple of seasons . Whilst the top teams continue to make the semis (and finals ). Even teams with no european pedigree like Boro and Bolton have acquitted themselves well against 'bigger' sides, which suggests our 'middle-ranking' teams can cut in on the wider UEFA cup-stage.

I don't think there's any other way but comparing the relative success of teams from those Leagues in competitions - i.e. the European Cup and UEFA Cup - over a period of several years.
