The tactic today was undoubtedly the correct one, with a comfortable win.Like YKI said, it was a given how the game was going to play out with the personnel employed. It's just a shame to have to endure ugly football when we have been playing decently in recent times, I was looking forward to an entertaining game and it did disappoint.

Yes but what has to be considered is where the football is heading. It was described as a throwback to a period where we won semi regularly playing that type of wasteful football and despite the success it left the team lacking considerably when it came to winning the top prizes. I hope its the last I see of it.

I can't be arsed to articulate, so I'll to settle for "That's f***ing b******s"!!

Get yer own opinions rather than spouting s**** you've heard elsewhere!!

The tactics today were a neccessity. We've got a very big Semi Final coming up, and were playing away against a team in form who'd managed to beat both United and Arsenal at home this season.

Our remit was pretty clear, take the 3 points and don't overly tire yourselves out. It was as professional and as economical a victory as you'll see this season.

No it wasn't great to watch, but that type of performance has been a rarity this season, and until we buy the strikers we need in the summer I can understand why we did it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see maybe 5 or so performances not at all disimilar again next season. Winning games like this 1-0 is how you win titles.

And we still had a gear to go up. Blackburn were outclassed and were lucky to get away only 1-0 down.

One? We could've gone up by about 5 gears today and absolutely mauled them...

But that would've been a waste of energy.

Sums up my feelings exactly. Well said that man! :)

I got the feeling first half that they assumed the threat was from down the flanks - Carar and Sami swapped sides and were doubling up with the full backs instead of playing down the centre. Don't know if that got picked up on the telly or not.

i saw that too...

but you know, commentators nowadays are not very bright with football tactics!!! ;)

I don't buy it.That game was tougher than it had to be because we kept giving the ball to Blackburn everytime we won it back. Then we proceed to chase them around to park ... and so the vicious cycle continues.Bulls*** is what I say to anyone who believes you have to play like that to conserve.Sure there will be plenty of times where the players are out of sync or are just lacking that bit of adrenaline to play at their best.At least try and go out and play the right way, not hoofball thanks.

The game wasn't tough at at though, the closest they came to scoring was from a couple of misplaced crossed. We gave them a lot of possession but we were never on the rack.

I do think we played like that because we didn't have Crouch though. I also think it suggests that Rafa doesn't think Morientes can hold up the ball, another nail in his coffin?

Right enough, but it was not even necessary to step up a gear at all. Proud of the lads they remained mostly calm when it could have easily turned into a nasty encounter, we controlled the game, took the points and if the 2 goals went in that should have been scored and we won 3-0 this debate would not be happening.

To suggest the performance was harking back to the old Houulier hoof ball days is absurd, we showed a level of maturity and togetherness that was never evident under the Frenchman. And as I said before, GH would have lost this game or hacked ot a difficult 0-0. Just look at the extra time, everyone expected that extra 5 minutes for Backburn to pressurise, but it turned out to be our best spell of the game, we never gave up and attacked till the end.

If the two of you can't see that that was a departure from rafa's normal tactics and was how Houllier normally sets up his team then I dunno. That game was how we played under Houllier when we were good under him. If you want to take that as deriding either gaffer then that's up to you. I'd rather just discuss what went out on the pitch because it's interesting.

The vital and obvious difference from Houlliers days is it was a tactical decision based on the opponents, not our only option.

Sammya, there were SOME resemblances to GH tactics, but if you can't see the startling difference between the way we played a game like this under ged (ie the only way we knew how) and the way we scrapped out an important win under Rafa (with an understrength line up and a tough away fixture) then I dunno. There is really no point debating it beyond recognising a resembleance, but to imply in any way that Rafa is not an improvement on GH will make no friends. Simply because it's utter bolocx.

i find the complainst about tactics baffling. before yesterday, Blackburns home record was played 16, won 11, drawn 3, lost 2, they are one of teh hardest sides to beat at home, yet we played in such a manner that Reina never had a real save to make, won one nil, and hit teh woodwork twice. i'll take that every week thanks

We can't control every game we play, no team can. Yesterday was a bit backs to the wall but without the players ever looking like they we're in a panic.

Yes, a bit like in Houllier's day but with far more composure

rafas vision for the team is becoming reality.

we are like an F1 car which requires a different set up depending on the track and conditions. we are at this stage in our development now where we can change our styles to suit the managers demands.

this is our idea and it is clear.

cc, think you're right, their front two were pulling wide, trying to make some space, I think they were doing the right thing throughout,, and trying to keep the ball and be patient, which ended up just giving us practice in playing two banks of four.

the interesting thing was that it loked to me as if Carra was the one who decided and organised that. He pulled Sami over, spoke to him about it, pointed him over to the right hand side. They had another talk about it a minute or two later. Obviously I don't know if Rafa had instructed him to do that or if he is given the nod by Rafa to sort it out as he sees fit depending on how the play pans out, but whatever - it was done, and it worked. Quality management. Quality captaincy.

I didn't spot the chat, not being there maybe, but it could also have had to do with where Blackburn targeted. Bentley was getting some joy against Warnock, and the were looking to get in behind that side, with Warnock having to get tight on Bentley, and Bellamy looking for the sapce behind. All that seems to have been fixed as you say, and also after HT when we dropped deeper

am I reading this right?

Some people are complaining about beatinng Blackburn away?

ffs

The problem is not with the tactic or whatever. It's the departure from the style of play that has seen the team return to form of sorts like pulling out that win against everton with ten men. That was done by destroying them with a passing game. I mean how many times did johnny riise mill the ball a mile into the air , a mile upfield to nobody. The fact is it's completely f***ing un-neccessary when you have Xabi Alonso in the midfield. I don't see what the difference in pointing that out whether we have won or lost.. it's the wrong way to play.
