When Robson was leaving there was supposedly a problem with discipline the changing room so they gave the job to one of the biggest disciplinarians in the game. Now that Souness is gone the problem is there defence so who are they looking at...

His style of football is the very antithesis of what the Geordies want, so the fans will force him out before the end of the season.

It is the fact tha he is washed up and would get s*** results that would make the fans force him out.

Does anyone honestly think that fans of Newcastle (50 years and counting since their last domestic trophy) would really give a s*** about the style of football their side plays if they actually won stuff? They might bang on about 'sexy football' and all that s**** but it rings hollow with me.

Most overrated fans ever.

kin ell, that George Graham one is months old isn't it :D

Martin O'Neill has been lined up for ages now!

Anyway, Newcastle... kinda shows how dreadful Souness was, looking at them now. Roeder has done so well. And without having the likes of Owen anywhere near his side, and Parker out as well now, Luque the great invisible man. Yet there they are steadily climbing the table.

Just to add spice to an already well seasoned story: my next door neighbour is an ST at Sunderland. He's got a fanzine with a scanned menu from a sportsman's dinner which O'Neill attended. One SAFC fan asked him if he's still a Makem supporter "not as much as I used to be, but yeah, I still look out for the results". So, would you take the Newcastle job then? "No, I wouldn't".

Are you prepared to put it in writing on the back of this paper then? He did (could of course be a hoax).

I have heard that story before too.

I'm sure O'Neill isn't so precious as to not take a highly well paid job at a time he's looking to get back into managment, on the back of supporting a near neighbour in his youth!

And i'm also sure he'd tell a Mackem that he wouldn't take the Newcastle job.

Mind you, IF he had any sense, he'd wait till McClaren officially leaves for Ingerlund, and Boro need a new manager. Cos their chairman has more sense in his little finger than Freddie Sheppard has in all of that ample body of his :o

todays Mirror reckons they're gonna offer Roeder the job now!

I was about to say that they should give roeder, a 1 year contract, just to make sure he didnt fluke it this season, then if he does well - sign him up on a longer contract.

the article also says they're thinking of bringing in GH to be 'Director of Football' as although Roeder's good he doesn't have the necessary clout in the transfer market..

good point Mike, i seem to recall that now.. plus this was written by Alan Nixon so goes some way to explaining why it isn't mentioned..

NEWCASTLE United are ready to stun football by appointing Glenn Roeder as boss in a new-look set-up at St James' Park. Toon have been linked with some of the top young managers in the country since sacking Graeme Souness in February, but caretaker chief Roeder will be offered the job if he can take the club into the UEFA Cup.

He has insisted he does not want the job permanently, but now the former youth academy boss is close to being officially promoted after impressing chairman Freddy Shepherd with his cool head since taking charge. The Geordie plan is for Roeder to be installed alongside a senior partner in a 'director of football' role - with Lyon chief Gerard Houllier top of the wanted list. Roeder is emerging as the leading candidate because of his good run of results - and snags with potential long-term replacements like Martin O'Neill.

The one-time West Ham manager will be offered the job if Newcastle finish the season in a European place. He could even get the nod if they finish the season in style but just miss out. They face Sunderland today with stand-in bosses Roeder and Kevin Ball going head-to-head in a game where the winner will have a much improved chance of becoming their clubs' full-time managers.

Newcastle are six points off Blackburn in sixth place and a storming finish could transform their season. Former Liverpool boss Houllier may be tempted to come back to England and his experience would help Roeder, whose only short-coming is his lack of expertise and experience in the transfer market.

5th and 6th and the FA cup winners get a UEFA cup place. If the FA cup is won by us or Chelsea does that mean 7th gets the spot or the losing finalists?

Newcastle look good value at the moment, their next three games are Sunderland, West Brom and Birmingham.

It's been rumoured Newcastle not qualifying for Europe activates a clause in Owen's contract, will be interesting to see what happens.

losing finalists. and Toon fans will be seriosly pissed off if Roeder gets the job, the list of fantasy managers they had drawn up was laughable. they really are laughable. i wonder if they will have an open day at St James and 25000 turn out to welcome him. it will be even funnier next year with no shearer and probably no Owen. i really hate Newcastle
