The way Pepe come off his line for that Davies chance was brilliant

Exceptional goalkeeper, looked simple in the end because it didnt involved him flying across a goal to keep a shot out instead just rushing out and taking the ball out of play but that saved a certain goal, Davies only had to square it for a tap in for one of his fellow yard dogs. His pace is one enourmous asset, he's great.

I wish he wouldn't punch it into the air like he does though.

Dont see a problem with it if he thinks he cant catch it, it clears the immediate danger for a second or so and we always have loads of bodies in the area anyway. I'd rather he does that than trying to catch a difficult ball dropping it then giving someone a tap in, like his error at Bolton.

I only don't like it when he gets it wrong (i.e does a schit punch) otherwise the only time i've winced was one he did against W.B.A when he could just have caught it. I think he's a top top keeper though. Just hope he keeps it going over several seasons

People really need to get over the punching thing

Especially as Rafa has told him to punch most of the time according to Pepe the other week on the off. site.

By the way next season new lighter balls will be used that according to the Wigan keeper will make even normal catching difficult!

exactly. and to see just how effective it is, just look at our goals against column

Based on current form, Reina should be ahead of Casillas for Spain in my opinion. That's not to say Casillas is s*** or anything, it's just that our Pepe is more confident, commanding, assured and bigger than the Madrid man.

i remember thinking after Jerzy's first season that we'd signed an absolute world class keeper - he then got the 'Forlans' and didn't really seem to recover.. i don't think, if he made a mistake, that Pepe would have that problem - he seems a lot more confident and mentally strong.. people say playing behind that defence must be easy - i reckon it's possibly just as tough to have top stay so alert for the whole game in case that one chance happens to get through..

agree with the original post too - thought it was top class keeping.. Pepe's da man..

He's dropped a couple of clangers already. Seem to remember away at Brum for their 2nd, and Bolton away.

I think he's proved he has the mental strength that you've mentioned.

Also, the catching thing, fookin get over it. As long as the ball is cleared, it's good enough. There is more risk catching the ball in mid air amongst a crowd of players, falling down awkwardly and then dropping it for a striker to tap the ball in.

hes a really good keeper

his kicking is a bit crap though.

I'd say erratic rather than crap - seems to rush it a bit sometimes in his eagerness to create a chance on the break.

He did one pass to Luis I think it was, yesterday that Xabi would have been proud of.

You can drop the odd clanger as long as it's against Brum or Bolton, it's when it happens against Man U or Chelsea that the newspapers will start comparing him to James and Dudek and giving some stupid knickname. Thats when the apparant pressure is on because that's when BBC and SKY start referring to it all the time.

he has a habit of sometimes hoying the ball into the stands.

But nowhere near as bad as Lehman is at that!

As hamstrung said - it's erratic, rather than bad!

The best keepers drop the odd clanger - VanDer Sar and Cech have done a couple belters this season as of course has Pepe.

It's when you take it to the next level that it gets picked up on big time - and James is the expert on that - see his latest this weeked?! And Dudek as well unfortunately, cos he made a fair few in quick succession, and seemed to lose his nerve because of it - a bad problem for a goalie!

The likes of Pepe, Cech and Van Der Sar are on a different level tho to these goalies.

I think weve got one of the best keepers in the game. Commanding, very vocal, positioning second to none and a superb shot stopper.

Pepe makes being a goalie look easy
