Manchester United's chief executive David Gill has demanded that Fifa pay clubs a slice of its earnings from the World Cup. The comments, made at the Soccerex event in London yesterday, were the latest in G14's war of words with the world and European governing bodies that has emerged over recent weeks.

"We believe our players are the assets providing the income," said Gill. "This World Cup will be a fantastic event and produce huge, huge profits and the belief of the clubs is that the assets are being provided for free by the clubs.

At the moment we have to provide them for free at the request of the countries. Manchester United's view is not that there should be a pound-for-pound reimbursement but we believe there should be a slice of that income that should be distributed to the clubs of participating players on an equal basis."

Fifa generated £636m in profit from the last World Cup in South Korea and Japan, some of which was distributed to the national associations participating in the tournament with the balance used to finance its administrative and charitable activities over the following four years.

"I don't buy the argument that international appearances add value to a player - they come in and ask for more money," Gill said, emphasising that players that become internationals command higher wages, adding to the strain on club budgets.

"We are not a selling club and we seldom sell international players. We recognise that Uefa and Fifa are non-profit organisations but they do not have a monopoly on what's for the good of the game. We put resources and money into our community."

I agree.

Football now is about the clubs, international football, certainly in Europe, is on its ar*e.

The FA/UEFA etc get a free ride on the back of the clubs, demanding players are released for money spinning (for them) friendlies, disrupting our preperation for important games, and then sending them back knackered, injured or tapped up, and they never give anything back. ie, the shambolic decision to make us play in the CL qualifiers this season and the constant whinging (via the press) that we should resting Gerrard as he might get tired for the WC.

Call me unpatriotic, but I haven't felt the England team represents England for a long time, it represents the corrupt FA and nothing else.

I agree.

FIFA should then charge all the clubs whose players are participating in the Tournament a fee for giving their players exposure to the biggest TV audience in the World.

yes, lets have less money spent on grass roots football and promoting the game in africa and asia etc and more given to a few huge money making enterprises masquerading as football clubs so that they can in turn hand over even more ridiculous sums of money to a bunch of spoilt b******s who think the world owes them a large fortune because thay have a talent for kicking a ball. This is not aimed solely at Man U, all of the G14 have massive incomes which they choose to blow on big salaries. Giving them all more money will make no difference at all other then the players and teir agents will demand and pocket more.

But if Gill's statement was made on behalf of the G14, then surely the LFC board must be of a similar opinion?

In any case I think it's a crap idea. Only the "big" clubs (i.e. the G14 + Chelsea) stand to make a profit from it, as most internationals play for them anyway.

Yes but only the big clubs run the risk of loosing players due to injury and fatigue.

I believe it is the G14 who are asking for this. So that includes Liverpool.
