From the BBC Website .... Jocky is over in the US for The Masters which starts this week. He played the course, then made a comment about how tough it is as a non-professional golfer (Hansen plays off 3...)...

If you put an amateur footballer into a good Liverpool team, he may not look great but he could possibly get by without disgracing himself.

Not in golf. If you put an amateur in at the highest level in golf - the Masters, for example - you are talking light years of difference.

If he was fit enough, and his teammates always showed for the ball, so he wouldn't have to do to much with it, maybe?

That makes me think of how monotonous snooker players must be, especially to get a 147.

It must happen often enough for amateur golfers to get a hole on one, or amateur darts players to get 180... but getting a 147 must be beyond difficult...

Don't think it is as hard as is sometimes made out. For instance a mate at school had a 141 break when he was an 17 year old amateur. Had a quick look on the website of a big Neath snooker club and 7 players have highest breaks in the 140s, with two having hit 147s.

snooker is as monotonous as feck. i used to be a handy player a few years ago, i have a highest breat in the 70's and would often get 50+ breaks. i used to practice with a guy who briefly was in the top 100 in teh world at snooker, and he used to knock in century breaks all the time in practice, and he was way way off the level of the top players in the game, although he is now making a decent living in America playing 9 ball pool

Fair enough, but I don't reckon he had to use Liverpool in his example. He could have said Southampton for instance. Who knows, there may have been an amatuer in their past who was signed on a temporary basis then put on as a sub and ended up a laughing stock. As did the Manager.

Ali Dia was crap and was laughed out of town. In a team sport.

A scratch golfer misses the cut in a big golf tournament and nobody notices.

Come on - You know I'm right.

i reckon a scratch golfer would be lucky to break 100 at Augusta

Of course it is. Simple probability. A hole in one is one freakishly good/lucky shot, a 180 is three pretty hard shots and a 147 is 45 (?) shots. I'm a very average darts player but I've thrown 180 once.

EDIT: Didn't quite make my point. Top skill gets you lots of 180s. You need some skill and a lot of luck to get a hole in one. To get a 147, you need top, top skill and a fair bit of luck.

Another golf tale. Think it might have been Travino?

Says to his caddy (on a course in Britain he'd never played during a practice round), "how far to the hole"

Caddy: It's a 7 - iron

Travino: I don't want to know what club, I asked how far to the hole

Caddy: Trust me, it's a 7 - iron

Travino: Give me the 7 iron

(sticks ball on the green. Just as caddy picks up the bag Travino stops him).

Travino: give me another ball, and the 5 iron

(sticks ball on the green)

Travino: give me another ball and the 5 wood

(sticks ball on the green)

Travino: give me a 3 iron and another ball

(sticks ball on the green)

Travino: Next time I ask how far it is to the hole, tell me how far it is to the hole!

Was this the first time he had been his caddy??? If not... bit weird that.

I'd love if he missed with the 5 iron.

Travino: Gimme another ball and the 5 iron.

(sticks ball thirty yards over the green to the left and into the car park)

Caddy: I don't get you, what was that for?

Travino: Pick up the f*cking bag.

Certain courses only allowed local caddies to be involved.

Bruce Edwards wasn?t; allowed to caddy for Watson in the early days at the open ? I suspect, given the age of the players, that it would have been the same for Travino.

Even if it wasn; true ? it?s a nice little story.

'TREVINO'

ffs.

Apologies. Still not sure it was him - I need to check.

He was using a local caddy for 'course knowledge'. Not sure what forced that to be the case though. Happened quite a bit back in the day. Even now some pro's will opt for someone local with excellent course knowledge, particularly in the British Open's when you need to know every detail on every fairway and green.

George Weah's 'cousin' got sussed pretty quickly though. Although Sot'on weren't all that

But he was brought on as a sub, presumably with instructions to make an impact. That's different to not disgracing yourself.

I've played with Ronnie Whelan and Phil Neal and disgraced myself.

To back Hansen's comment up ... it happened .... late 70's. Think the BBC show was 'The Big Time'.. same one Sheena Easton had her break on.

They took a lad from the Liverpool Sunday League or similar.. good player ... trained him up and he played for our beloved LFC.

The game was an end of season testimonial - cant remember who - may have been Cally - and the lad did well. Who ever we played thought he was a squad member when they were told.

Someone with a better memory than mine may shed some more light on this ..

I stand corrected then. :)
