David O'Leary has insisted he is the right man to revive Aston Villa's fortunes as speculation continues to mount over his future.

Former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri is reported to be a possible successor to O'Leary in the summer if chairman Doug Ellis decides to wield the axe. O'Leary has admitted the 2005-2006 campaign has been a big disappointment with Villa in the bottom six of the Premiership and a section of supporters calling for his removal after three years at the helm.

O'Leary said: "My playing and managerial record is all about being at the top of the league, we are fifth from bottom - and I don't like that. It leaves a bad taste."

He added: "I came into this season wanting a good season at the other end of the table where I belong, where I have been and where I want this club to be.

"This year we have fallen below the standards of the past two seasons, when we finished in the top 10, for various reasons that I can't go into. Everyone is frustrated.

"This season has been disappointing and that's what makes me more determined in the summer to put it right. I will put it right because I know how to put it right.

"We've got to do the best with what we've got until the end of the season and see what the summer brings to hopefully push this club to where it should be."

O'Leary is targeting a "big James Beattie type of centre-forward" as well as strengthening the heart of his defence.

He also wants to sign on-loan Newcastle midfielder James Milner, currently sidelined with a virus, on a permanent basis.

Well, he's got some confidence in himself I suppose.

His sacking's going to be such a pleasure to watch. Preferably after either a 7-0 hammering at Anfield or a 0-5 humbling by Birmingham at Villa Park - with a Brum fan running up to him in the technical area and slapping him playfully around the face a couple of times.

haha totally agree, there are some whingers as managers in the Premiership but he takes some beating, every week win lose or draw he moans.

Villa are such a pathetic club these days though. Nothing to look forward to,rarely anything to celebrate, just mediocrity.

At least club like Sunderland have promotion to celebrate some years.

He has to be like that i suppose. I thought up until his last 6months at leeds that they played really well. I know there was a lot of (imaginary) cash there but he had them playing.

But were they more than the sum of their parts? Cos any good team should be.

The situation at Villa will be a recurring theme wherever he goes.

He starts out well by saying the right things to the chairman initially to get the job. He then gives young players a chance and they play their heart out for him. Ditto his own signings. The older pros already at the club are less likely to be taken in by his brown-nosing bullsh*t, so he inevitably falls out with them. This leaves the squad constantly short unless he has money to bring in replacements. Win, lose or draw, he constantly spouts self-serving crap on the telly and in the papers. After 18 months or so, even the younger players are getting p*ssed off with him. He loses the players and the chairman realises that he's dealing with a bullsh*t artist.

O'Leary is sacked, spends the next 6 months out of football waiting for the 'right job' before eventually taking the reigns at a progressively club where the cycle starts again.

I thought they were when they played us in the treble year in the F.A cup and at anfield. They did well in the league at theirs too when they beat us but i still think we were a touch unlucky.

What was Milan thinking??

"I can't be arsed playing for that Houllier w*nker or moving to another country before the World Cup. I'll toddle off to Villa for a year, where Diamond Dave O'Leary has managed to get the club to agree to a big contract and a fat signing on fee for me. I'll let him lick my a*** for a year, before having a storming World Cup and moving to sunny Spain or Italy just in time for the 2006/07 season"

£18 million for Baros?

They better hope Chelsea want him then.

I love how he's so proud of this clause in Baros' contract. Odd man.

Jesus, there's no end to this guy blowing his own trumpet.

Maybe the £18m will be used to bring in the "four players" that he was constantly going on about in the press last year. *snigger*

Oh sorry! I forgot Bamber Gascoigne would be lurking around

Double negatives are so yesterday.

Triple negatives are the new black.

Must try harder!!

That would be the deal of the century if they got £18 million for Baros. How the feck is that going to happen? He's not exactly set the world alight this season has he?

I thought we could have got more for him wqhen we sold him for sure but 18 million.
