Apparently Fowler become Liverpool's record goal scorer when he scored against WBA yesterday. Well, I guess 173 is half of 346, so it's near enough...

Also, for Fowler's goal Cisse was offside, and for Cisse's goal: "Alonso was just outside his own box when he launched the ball hopefully forward." How dare they...

Independent

Telegraph say that Fowler looked offside...

Telegraph

From the offal:

Meanwhile, Benitez was keen to praise Robbie Fowler after the striker's sixth minute strike took him ahead of Kenny Dalglish in the all-time Anfield goalscoring charts.
Maybe that's what they were talkikng about?

Maybe that's what lazy journalism does for them. Yep, we all know Fowler went ahead of Dalglish in the scoring charts, but for a journo to 'forget' about Ian Rush when talking about Liverpool scoring records is just stunningly inept.

And lol, someone has clearly noticed the error of the earlier edition and so the match report no longer says 'Fower's 173rd goal made him Liverpool's leading goal scorer'.

Edit: Wouldn't be at all surprised if the printed version still contains the embarassing mistake, and I actually hope it does.

hopeful ball?

if that had been Ronaldhino (though he would never be that near to his keeper!) or Zidane, the press would be drooling. However it was Alonso and he plays for that hoof ball team.

i rewound the DVR to watch that pass about a dozen times, Alonso puts the ball exactly where he wanted to and it was an amazing ball.

the guy alongside the main commentator over here was purring about the pass. great moves do not have to have 20 passes when 1 is more than enough.

what is it with alonso and his lucky hopeful long ball punts up the field? he did the same when we played sunderland away ...sheer coincidence ( although if the lad is english then he meant it and his name is frank...)

to take it a step further even, you can see when he strikes it that he hits it with enough backspin that it sits up for djib to take it on the run. fat frank can't even hope to hit that kind of ball. xabi's touch, especially on the longer balls, is world class

This is more like it from the times:

'Alonso operated near the pinnacle of his powers, directing play with his vision, touch and execution. He was simply immense, the pass he played for Liverpool?s second goal, about 70 yards straight to the feet of Cisse, the most exquisite demonstration of his talent. Taking the ball off goalkeeper Jose Reina, he took one look and delivered the perfect ball.'

agree with that. the vision was beautiful and xabi's execution of it was utterly perfect. that was assist of the season.

That goal by Cisse was like watching American football.

Alonso - Quarterback

Cisse - Wide Reciever.

It simply was an amazing pass.

And yet Marwood was blaming the defence.

Perfect pass, brilliantly taken on the run by Cisse and an excellent goal all round.

I just can't resist continuing the theme:

Lazy

From the Indy again - same journalist who wrote the match report for the Sunday paper

both goals came from long balls by Xabi Alonso which should have been easily dealt with.

The second was a long ball (and a most sublime beautiful one at that) but I hardly think Alonso's pass to Cisse for our first goal is the sort of thing normally thought of as a long ball.

In his Sunday report he said Cisse looked offside for the first goal (he may have looked it, but he wasn't). For the Monday report, he says that Fowler looked offside for the first goal. Again, he may have looked offside, but he was level at worst and with another 24 hours to write the report, there is no excuse for this.

Finally:

Rafael Benitez, would not say whether Fowler would be offered a new contract in the summer. "He needs a few more goals this year. We won't decide on his future now. We will make a decision in a few weeks."

I can't find the exact quotes, but I'm pretty sure that after the match Benitez said that whether Fowler gets another contract won't depend on how many goals he scores but what he believes Fowler would be able to offer the team next season.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a sports journalist, but I obviously watch too much football, pay attention to the games, and don't do enough coke to get a job doing that...

It was a great pass, but if Hyypia or Carra had let that past them we would have went mad.
