I would not have believed it if someone had said to me in August that with 5 games to go we would still be in with a mathematical chance of winning the league.

You wouldn't have believed that we could be 15points behind the leaders?

meaning that he didn't think we would be capable of being 15 points behind Chelsea at this stage.

Obviously otherwise he wouldn't have said it and lets be honest who in there heart of hearts would have belived we would have been. not many, certainly not me.

15 points is a f*ck of a lot of points especially when you're talking about before the season has even ended. I would have thought we'd be within 15 points of the leaders with five games left to go

I seriously doubt that Sammy. it's the equivalent of losing 5 games behind a team that only lost once in the league last year isn't it?

I thought being as were european champions and the manger had a year's extra experience and he'd improved the squad that we'd be a lot closer. I didn't think chelsea would be as good and in all honesty i thought if we'd got the deals rafa anted that we would have won the thing

Agree with that part, but I can't say I'm at all disappointed with our current squad

Just shows how crucial the games between your main rivals are, if we had beaten Chelsea and Man Utd home and away then we would be top going into the final stretch. In reality we have picked up 1pt from a possible 12.

I am sure this is one area where Rafa knows he has to improve if we are to win the title.

I think we've done great. But should probably have about 6 points more than we do, taking into account some matches which we've dominated but fail to score enough goals to win, Charlton and Birmingham come to mind.

Anyway, there was a point where people were comparing (and still are?) our results to that of last season. I've always maintained that it is NOT a credible indication of our progress, because last season was a freak one. We had the distraction of Europe and injuries; it meant we were going to be inconsistent.

Agreed.

Looking at it another way, if we had beat the Chavs home and away we would be joint top :)

If we'd beaten Chelsea at home and away, instead of losing both, we'd currently be level with them.

Makes ya think don't it ?

Maybe I should have just read this post first.

Hmmm....once they scored at the Bridge, we were outclassed. At Anfield though, if Traore didn't decide to have the howler he did, it could have been a different result.

But say we drew at Anfield. That would be a 3 point difference reduced. Let's maybe zero it down to other matches over the season where we should have finished teams off or held on to draw, but failed to do so for various reasons. Say we beat Boro away on the first day, Charlton and Birmingham at Anfield (6 points difference) and then drew Man Utd and Arsenal away (2 points).

We would be 11 points closer to Chelsea had all the above happened. As for the matches I picked out, the little tiniest changes in decisions or rub of the green which went against us made such a huge difference in the end, when the effects are accumulated.

It's just disappointing that the short blip last month has slightly taken the gloss off an otherwise excellent season. Look through the fixture list and there haven't been too many poor performances by the team. Matches in which we've dropped points, many of them we have played well enough to win.

I think we've made great strides this season...

We are 9pts ahead of last season's final tally with 5 games to go. That is significant progress. At 67pts it is our best points tally in 4yrs already.
