Possibly the hardest CB in the league. Not in a thuggish Duncan Ferguson way, or in a pretend Tim Cahill way - just a real tought, honest straight-forward player.

Cemented his place as one of the great Liverpool defenders, IMO.

I never saw Hansen, Lawrenson so Sami is my defending great of my time.

Surely to be classed in the Schmeichel class of import, cost nothing and should be considered world-class for the last 5 years.

Class player and loyal servant

not so long ago he was derided on here as having the turning speed of the titanic. How quickly we forget..

To be fair though, he still does. Reina has changed everything.

Houllier's best buy.

Don't forget Didi, Finnan, Riise and the reborn Kewell...

Sami is a legend, and rightly so. The past defender of our lot he reminds me most of is the Collossus himself. Rarely spectacular, always reliable and hard as nails.

Just proves how wrong many of us were. The suggestion was that we needed to play with a higher defensive line and Sami wouldn't be able to handle it due to lack of pace.

All it took was a prematurely bald nutcase of a keeper to dispel that notion.

For my money, he's the most consistent defender in the league, and has been since he came here.

You do realise that 75% of these fora are made up of prematurely bald nutcases, don't you? I fear a Netherton lynchin'...

I'd agree with all that and acknowledge I was wrong.

Ah - a five and a half hour train journey home with stops at Birmingham New street and Gloucester in the pissing rain after a 20 minute wait in a siding near Worcester all accompanied by Virgin rail's best overpriced stewed tea couldn't even take the shine off today! :)

He's brilliant, and you've just gotta love his composure.

IMO not a struck match between Sami and Didi as Ged's best buy .... and I may also add that after such a long time out, I tip my hat to one Harry Kewell.

One of my favourite moments of the season was the home game when Sami had to go off for treatment after a cut to his head. He came bouncing back onto the pitch a few minutes later heavily bandaged to a great reception and proceeded to clear the next corner with a massive clearance. Brilliant.
