Now Kirkland breaks a finger

Stuart James, Paul Kelso and Matt Scott

The Guardian

Chris Kirkland's slim hopes of making England's World Cup squad appear to have all but disappeared after he broke a finger in training yesterday, the latest setback in a career which has been blighted by injuries. The West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper's time on the sidelines will almost certainly book Robert Green's place on the plane to Germany this summer as England's No3 behind Paul Robinson and David James.

Kirkland missed out on the 2004 European Championships when he broke a wrist shortly before the tournament. Having recovered from surgery on a longstanding back problem, the goalkeeper joined Albion from Liverpool on a season-long loan in the summer and reclaimed a place in the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Northern Ireland in September.

He clearly didn't drink enough milk when he was growing up... I can see it now.

Kirkland - What are you drinking milk for?

Young Scouser - Ian Rush says that if you don't drink milk you'll only be good enough to become Liverpool's most expensive goalie, show early promise but only play a handful of games cos you're constantly injured. You're Dad will have a big bet on you being an England international which will look a certainty at one point but cos you're always injured it'll never come off. Oh and then you'll be shipped off to play for West Bromich Albion.

Kirkland - West Bromich Albion, who are they?

Young Scouser - Exactly.

Kirkland - I'll have a can of coke so.

he really did choose the wrong career didn't he :hmm:

Cotton wool quality controller would have been better, although he'd have found a way to get hurt doing that as well.

will this affect a potential sale in the summer?

If he's out for the season - I guess it will affect it. He's also only played 10 games this season, hardly the sort of run of games that'll convince clubs he's ready to get a full season under his belt!

Kirkland out for rest of season

West Brom goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken finger in a training ground accident.

Kirkland, who is on a season-long loan from Liverpool, has fractured the tip of his index finger and is expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

The 24-year-old has made 10 appearances for Bryan Robson side's this season.

And the injury is almost certain to end his outside hopes of a call-up for the England World Cup squad.

Former Coventry keeper Kirkland has figured in recent England squads but has been dogged by injury.

The broken finger is the latest in a long list of problems that includes ankle, finger, wrist, kidney and back injuries.

Although surgery is not required, he is unlikely to have the chance to impress England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson before the World Cup squad deadline on 15 May.

With Kirkland apparently out of the equation, Norwich's Robert Green now looks certain to be selected as Eriksson's third choice, behind Paul Robinson and David James.

Kirkland joined West Brom last summer in the search for regular first-team football.

However, injuries and the form of Tomasz Kuszczak have restricted his appearances.

He has not played a league game since October - with just a couple of FA Cup appearances to his name this year

He should have a layer of jello permanently around him. Seems like thin air can break something off his body or even rupture his lungs.

gonna be tough to sell him this summer now tho.

Rafa will be cursing ;)

Doubt teams would be willing to pay anything much at all for him.

His contract has still got 3 years to run as well hasn't it?!

poor lad, dont think we'll ever know whether he was any good or poo.

Hope he recovers from his injury as no doubt he'll be sold in the summer.
