Well it was last week actually but it was just mentioned again.

How is it whenever we concede a goal using zonal marking it's put into question wether or not it's the right system, yet when goal after goal is scored against teams who use man marking it's never brought up wether or not that system is working?

Lazy journalism/punditry and a lack of trust for differing ideas will always get some people on the backs of zonal marking.

"30 clean sheets this season? hmmn - I don't see what Benitez is trying to acheive. He doesn't know his best team" - or other crap spouted from the likes of Charlie Nicholas and his hype inventing friends.

Have learnt to switch off when some pundits go on about Liverpool - their comments do not seem to based on reality - let alone be accurate.

Plus an inherent lack of understanding and an inability/unwillingness to learn.

Is it me but I swear other teams are trying zonal marking thamselves.

Yesterday for the Chelseas goal it looked like Shearer was standing on the corner of the six yard box at the near post and there was a couple others scattered along the six yard line.

Listening to the match on FiveLive, their pundit on the night, John Goodman, came out with some b******s about 'not understanding how zonal marking works???' and generally being very dismissive of the system.

That's alright John, you keep trying to work it out while we keep collecting clean sheets.

Basically, people are stupid and Rafa isn't.

Hansen always said the system should work and explained why it was not when it failed.

I,m pretty sure Jocky said that they used it when he played for us.!!

I remember a quote in the Telegraph to that effect as well.

I know for a fact that we've been held as an example, and spoken about by another Premiership team who tried zonal marking!!

My mate plays centre half for them, and I noticed it looked like they were using it so I text him and asked if they were... the reply was "Been working on it over the last few weeks, we're copying you!!"

Has anyone noticed how that old favourite booze hound Redders can never mention Liverpool and Gerrard without also mentioning his fat-feck cousin? He's getting to be a bit of a pain.

Up there with keepers "who do not catch" ... just because it doesn't normally happen in the English league it must be bad.

What team ? What team ? What team?

I remember early in the season Arsenal were conceding lots of goals from set pieces, not once was man to man marking mentioned as a possible reason why. The truth is goals from set pieces usually fall into 2 categories

1. Individual mistake - i.e losing your man or ball watching

2. Great delivery - sometimes the quality of the ball put in is too good and there isnt much you can do about it.

Our defensive record proves that whatever Rafas coaching is working, but no matter how hard you work mistakes will happen and also the quality of delivery is sometimes just too good.

Let them keep moaning about zonal marking and we'll just continue to keep clean sheets.

Only Middlesbrough, and I don't think they still use it!

Interesting. I would guess it takes a good few months to get it nailed on anyway.

That's decisive management then. A manager with a vision and sticking to it.

Aye - I suppose he's only starting the punditry bit - but I can't help but tune out halfway through whatever blandness he is spouting and start thinking about how fine his missus looks and that she should be on instead of Jamie.

Hmnnn... a programme with the wives/girlfriends of footballers discussing the game - could be more interesting than what the current pundits could offer...

Jamie was brilliant after the Birmingham game though because he kept helping poor bloody DJ Campbell out who at that moment had the hardest job in the world.

Apart from Bruce's PR man surely? Or Bruce himself for that matter ;)
