Our local village school ? a lovely, old, and substantial Victorian building, central to village life, important local landmark and held in great affection by many people whether they went there or not ? was scheduled for demolition to be replaced by a new build that loked like an unfortunate collisoin between a flat roof pub and a BUPA hospital. The local council?s education committee railroaded the scheme through in an under-hand and massively insensitive way. And last night the plans were before the final stage of progress before the demolition started ? the planning committee threw out the plan because of the amount of local concerns ? educational, historic, cultural, social. Personally I wasn?t too bothered what they did to start with but the council?s horrible under-hand handling of it has turned me against their plan over the last year or so . Really good to know that people power can still make a difference ? sometimes after ?democracy? has failed..
