XabisBadFoot Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Just how brilliant Pepe Reina is. He is solid, makes very few, if any, mistakes, and is a world away from the high tensions of watching Dudek and the likes of James etc. Any time a ball was delivered into Dudek or James' areas, we all held our breaths for fear of a fumble or weak punch, but i just don't get that feeling with Pepe. Sign here if you appreciate just how ace he really is. PS - I will always love Jerzy for what he did in Istanbul, but on the whole, Reina is the better option.

XabisBadFoot Posted March 20, 2006 Author Posted March 20, 2006 Don't we have a thread on it most weeks? Errr, I'm quite new to the board, so - I apologise. I just thought he was class against Newcastle. Just seems to be very assured in everythin he does. He didnt stand a chance with their goal.
abc Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 He did spill a shot in the first half, but it was minor enough for him to clean up quickly. Excellent at decision making, though his kicking sometimes can be a little erratic, when coming out for clearances. Bloody funny though when Ameobi tried to stop him from running back to goal after his clearance fell to a Newcastle player bout 40 yards out.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 his kicking has been s**** for the last few games, mind
JohnnyH Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 So important he is never given the No.1 jersey though. It seems whenever one of our 'keepers moves to that number jersey, they all of a sudden become crap.
Jimi Rojo Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 His sweeping up of any through balls takes all the pressure off. A lot of keepers wait on their line and force a race between striker and defender, creating pressure at the back. Pepe is always first there. Very important part of his game and a part of why he never seems to have anything to do.
Bootle Buck Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 As solid a goalie as we have had since Ray Clemence. To think he is only 23 and in a new country is amazing. He has really slotted into the English game well.

He has really slotted into the English game well. Indeed, keepers don't normally get into the game properly 'til late 20's early 30's. An excellent buy, as was said before, when the ball is played into the box you know it's going to be either caught or punched to safety.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 I like the fact that he's always looking for quick distribution...if the attacking team commits men fwd, a good throw can take about 6 of them straight out of it, giving us a big counter-attacking opportunity (unless Cisse gets it). Most keepers stand there with the ball until the last attacker is btw him & the opp goal
Ombudsam Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Errr, I'm quite new to the board, so - I apologise. haha you joined this board on Valentines day. That can't be a good thing. Dudek in his first season v Reina in his first season thus far? I say Dudek just although Reina may win something
fred milne Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Dudek in his first season v Reina in his first season thus far?I'd say Reina myself, but its close.
Ombudsam Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 I'd say Reina myself, but its close. I think the argument for reina is that he has to more than Jerzy did that season in terms of sweeping and dominating the area. But i was so so impressed by dudek but maybe nostalgia tinges it as well as him following Westerveld

David Hodgson Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Reina's strength is his tactical awareness. He has what Clemence and Grobbelaar had in that respect. All of our keepers between Brucie and Pepe have been far too slow to release the ball, to get us going on the counter. Dudek's one of the worst for catching the ball and then looking around in every direction, like a f*cking ostrich, before, minutes later, finally letting go.
magneto Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Give him another season before we start singing his praises. Dudek had a stormer in 2001/2002.
