RAFA BENITEZ has commited his future to Liverpool after being guaranteed significant funds to rebuild his squad this summer.

Benitez held crunch talks with the Anfield board earlier this week, when he was convinced he would be provided with the resources he needs to challenge Chelsea for the Premiership in the seasons ahead.

A one-year-extension to his current deal has been widely reported but not yet signed. But it would be a symbolic gesture which eradicates Liverpool's genuine fears of losing their manager.

Both Inter Milan and Real Madrid made direct contract with Benitez's representative during the last month, and as late as last weekend the Anfield boss was keeping his options open until he spoke to the Anfield hierarchy.

Liverpool's guarantees to Benitez show how seriously the club considered the threat of losing Benitez, but how much work they've done behind the scenes in the last few weeks to ensure the manager will have the funds he requires.

Benitez and his coaching team have now been reassured about the future of the club and a summer of turmoil has been avoided.

Liverpool are not in a position to announce full details of their financial plans yet, but they confirmed at last month's AGM progress was being made in their pursuit of investment.

The ECHO understands the club is extremely close to securing the multi-million pound deal it needs in order to safeguard the future of the Stanley Park project and provide a transfer kitty for the manager.

They've been told a £10m grant from the North West Development Agency to regenerate the area around a new stadium will be withdrawn if Liverpool don't prove they have the private capital to pay for the £160m venue.

Hope we have proper investment and dont end up doing a leeds.

I hope the likes of Molby and Dave Hodgson acknowledge that with this being in the local press then it has substance

that was the line being thrown about when the Madrid and Inter story was flying around

Great if true but we have been at this point so many times and nothing has happened...

have we?

The manager agreeing a new contract after getting reassurances from the board about money?

Unless the conversation went

RP: "Rafa..here is a new contract"

RB: "What about the money in the summer?......Madrid and Inter want me...will give me what I want plus double my wages?"

RP: "oh erm..we'll get money...honest...erm...yeah...erm...we will...defo...Wanna borrow my pen?"

RB: "Thats ok then I believe you...where do I sign?"

Think Bascombe is overstating Rafa's dealings with Real and Inter in that article though... comes across as though he's trying to cover his own ass - "I was right, honest I was".

Not another bouncer from Edwards. When will it end ?

Let's wait and see eh.

In fairness Kev, while I'm still a bit skeptical about whether we will get investment (there have been a lot of false dawns), if a Bascombe article had appeared that was critical of the issue you'd be using it as evidence so I think it's fair enough for those on the other side of the debate to do likewise.

Yet if it was an article on Benitez leaving from Bascombe you'd be going off your rocker at Parry, yet its something positive and its wait and see? f***ing hell.

we've been here a million times before. im sceptical.

in december backscum said we had a huge january of transfer activity stadium and investment announcements.

I don't need an article to do that ;)

you lot just wont let it lie will you

you cant have it both ways

as has just been said...if Bascombe printed a story today saying that Rafa was going to Inter or Real the same people being sceptical would be saying he was defo off....

It is plainly obvious there is something in the pipeline as if there wasnt, and there would be limited resources come summer then Benitez would agree to nowt

Bascombe's 'exlusives' seem a bit made up to me these days - to cover past 'exclusives' that didn't actually come to any fruition.

He seems to catch himself in an ever spinning circle, that he can't get off :P

its as simple as this: irrespective of what Bascombe writes, he wouldn't be singing the deal if he didn't know the funds were going to be guaranteed.

Unless Rafa is using the extension as more leverage to up his potential salary at Madrid, but I don't think he's that kind of bloke.

No matter the Echos Liverpool writer, people would still have a go at him.

im just going on precedent - you do remember bascombe saying that in december?

yes

but i dont remember rafa agreeing a new deal

do u not think this is significant?

We simply need to be consistent. If a Bascombe story earlier was seen to support the idea that we'd no money, this one can't be dismissed as bobbins. And vice versa.
