This isn't a diss, as I've lived over here for 6 years; although you could argue that NY isn't America...

 

What I find odd is the midwest - well, anything not on the east or west coast, save maybe Chicago - is so wrapped up in cowboy culture; far-right politics, its love for guns, religion, militias etc.

 

This is a modern country, the only real 'western' country where more people go to church than don't - and it appears to be strengthening.

 

The complete disregard for anything 'non american' even though a few generations ago, these people weren't american. It's like Yerp in the middle ages.
