Ombudsam Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 This time last year I couldn't stand him. Really didn't see what he was doing at the club and genuinely would have driven down to London myself, provided I had earplugs for the journey so I didn't have to listen to him go on about how great he was. When he scored that goal for chelsea and turned in that performance in the final v them that was me gone and I was convinced he was literally the worst Liverpool captain i had ever seen and his presence was poisonous. Everytime he was asked about his future he'd ummm and he'd ahhh as if he wasn't on the pitch playing in the team which had just lost. HE EVEN DID IT AFTER THAT OWN GOAL. For all the world I would have swapped the name of the goalscorer of that third against olympiakos for any other. ...I had a point I think... Oh yeah, I like him now and he may go on to be one of our best captains ever. I can't believe how much he's changed. He's a completely different bloke (apart from when he refers to just how good he thinks he is). I'm rubbish at holding grudges but i really thought i'd hate him forever and never trust him again but he's almost back to being that kid who celebrated clearing that shot off the line against Everton like he'd won the cup final © fred milne. He's a genuine Leader of men now and I'm proud to have him as a Liverpool captain. I've not even started on just how good a player he is yet but I'll leave that for now. Well played steven
Cobs Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 This time next season, if we aren't challenging for the title the Press will be full of 'Gerrard set to leave Liverpool - only two years left on his current deal - can the club match his ambition' stories again - we'll see what you have to say about him then Sammy....

I was never arsed with the press linking him away, i was arsed with him wanting away.
Michael Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I have learned to keep a healthy scepticism towards all footballers. It's safer in the long run.
Archangel Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 He's a good lad. You cant be cynical all your life. He was going twice but came back, couldn't do it, lets face it not too many players have turned their noses up at the russians money. Yeah I know he earns a kings ransom and I resent that but with Gerrard I think its more than that
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 I have learned to keep a healthy scepticism towards all footballers. It's safer in the long run. it's the only sensible way
chrisbonnie Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 he`s not as pretty as Xabi, but we still would dont tell that missus
Swipe Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 When has he ever talked about how good he is? He's got confidence, sure - all the best do (Souness still reckons he's the b****x. Ballack would eat himself if he could) but i've never seen him as arrogant. Compare him to Joe Cole who has actually claimed he's one of the best four midfielders in the country.
Romario Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I still think Gerrard is shy when it comes to games against the big guns myself. He was total crap against Arsenal at the weekend and was made look more than average by an 18 year old. He's a wonderful player alright but he needs to man up and show Hamann like consistency when it counts.
chrisbonnie Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Compare him to Joe Cole who has actually claimed he's one of the best four midfielders in the country has Mr Potato head actually said that?

Against weaker teams he punishes them but against teams with players he knows are nearly his match I think he often goes into his shell. It's a shame as player like Lampard don't deserve to clean the skids of his boxers yet he seems to withdraw when up against that kind of media hyped player.Perhaps the whole team does but when Gerrard withdraws often our team does to.
Ombudsam Posted March 15, 2006 Author Posted March 15, 2006 When has he ever talked about how good he is? Who called himself the best player at the club, Da man and referred to himself and his international midfield partner as "two fantastic players". Clue: it wasn't Lampard. Anyway that wasn't the point of what i was writing
Lee W Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 He's a very, very influential player (too influential some might say), but I doubt he'll ever reach the level Souness was at, as a player or a captain. Also think too many people latch onto this "doesn't perform in the 'big games'" nonsense, like some accuse Henry of never performing in the big games because of his losers mentality. Gerrard performed superbly, in three different positions no less, at the highest level in club football on 25th May last season when it really counted. To imply he is a flat-track bully is wrong. I think he's destined to win everything with us though, he just needs a bit more quality around him in the final third of the pitch, which will probably see him improve even more.

In particular, he actually needs to do less to really get up there with the greats (if that makes any sense). At the moment he tries to do everything and be everywhere himself - sometimes at the expense of the team's shape. He needs to mature a little further and choose the time to get involved in the play. I think that would benefit everybody.
Guest Aussie_Red Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I'm not his biggest fan and I can spot quite a few weaknesses in his game but he is still one of our most important players. He does really frustrate me sometimes and I really lost a lot of love for him since he had that 'press announcement'.

He was so efficient it was hard to notice him.. as they say players who do the dirty work are rarely appreciated..
Swipe Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 has Mr Potato head actually said that? Yip! Was talking up his England chances a while back (before he secured a starting spot) and said "I definately think i'm at least one of the four best midfielders in the country". f***ing weird looking dwarf.
