liverbird04 Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 In the interests of crowd safety recruit the boys in blue Party-poopers of the week have to be the stewards at Anfield who attempted to prevent overjoyed Benfica players throwing their shirts into the crowd at the end of their victory over Liverpool. The players were only celebrating with their own fans, so there was no safety issue, and the rest of Anfield were applauding the visitors in any case. Fans appreciate gestures like that, especially when they have flown in from sunny Lisbon to find Liverpool almost invisible in persistent drizzle and Speke airport swarming with policemen in yellow jackets with dogs. What a welcome. Perhaps the police had received a tip-off that something historic was about to take place, like the first ever outbreak of Portuguese hooliganism. The 2008 European City of Culture has two years to learn some manners, and could start by not judging everyone else by its own standards. One can sympathise with match stewards erring on the side of caution, in that it is only a few weeks since Manchester United were the visitors and all sorts of unpleasantness was going on, but it is hard to see why an unfancied team who have come to Anfield and won with two handsome goals should not share their sense of achievement with supporters. And their shirts, if they so wish. I don't recall any stewards intervening on the occasion John Arne Riise celebrated a victory by throwing everything bar his underpants into the crowd. If the problem was sour grapes on the part of the stewards, then there is a simple solution - recruit Evertonians next time. They would have been right in there celebrating with the Benfica fans, quite possibly trying to catch a flying shirt or two for themselves. Just a thought. http://football.guardian.co.uk/Columnists/...1729202,00.html
Cunny Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 It's Paul Wilson's weekly attack on Liverpool. He's the main reason I stopped getting The Observer.
liverbird04 Posted March 11, 2006 Author Posted March 11, 2006 evertonian or manc I wonder ,loved the bit about not judging everyone to our standards ,I am just waiting for what marton samuel comes out with in the times to make my life complete .
kenny7 Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Just because they're stewards at Liverpool doesn't mean they support Liverpool, some may infact steward at Everton aswell.

Guest Kev Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Ofcourse the report doesn't mention the fact that Benfica fans were fighting each other, falling over and trampling on each other in order to get the shirts. There was netting on the first few rows of seats and a number of fans fell on the netting and suffered a few minor injuries. Throwing shirts into the crowd has caused loads of problems in the past as the crowd rush forward. There was one incident against AZ Alkmaar when we had to save one of their fans from getting a hammering from his own fans. It's great as a fan to get one of those shirts, but it does cause a lot of hassle and crowd safety is the over riding issue here.

My main concern is if I was to respond to this as a steward, it could seem as if it was an official response and that I was speaking for the club - which I can't. I'll make sure that it's brought to their attention on Wednesday night though. In fact I'm at Anfield on Monday night and will do it then. Edited March 12, 2006 by Kev

That goes without saying, I think everyone who knows your situation on here and elsewhere wouldn't expect you to abuse it. A couple of words in the right ears though . . .

He responded in an article something along the lines of: Unbelievably loads of Liverpool fans pointed out Alan Smith was applauded off the pitch, but this rose-tinted view of the actions of thousands should be ignored because the two or three idiots who threw bottles at the ambulance are much more representative of Liverpool fans. Guest roger Posted March 12, 2006 Posted March 12, 2006 The 'security' elements at Anfield are restrained and reliable. From my experience. Contrast that with the operations at Newcastle.
