...to turn our side in to a league winning side?

With all this rumoured talk of Rafa demanding £30million from the board, it got me thinking if he'd really need this to transform our league chances next year. And the answer is I don't think so. Of course it would be nice if he was given this amount, but I think Rafa is more clever with his transfer dealings, won't pay over the odds for players and can spot some great talent for cheaper prices.

With this in mind and the fact that I don't think we are too far away from having an extremely strong starting 11 and good backup, I think Rafa could work wonders with even £20million. For example...

- Owen, Kuyt, Yakubu, etc are options we can look at for players who know where the back of the net is and for £12million ish, we might be able to get one of them (of course there are other similar options).

- Its obvious we need a right winger and we could pick up the likes of Pennant for about £5million I'd say (less if the brum get relegated). He has his off field problems, but even with these, theres no denying he's has been in outstanding form for Birmingham this year. Mayvbe rafa could straighten him out. At that price its worth taking a chance.

- Some have been saying we need another LB. Aurelio of Valencia would be a great addition to rotate with Riise and I think he is on a free transfer this summer (need to double check).

We also have Gonzales already coming. This would leave us with the options of:

Reina/Carson

Finnan/Kromkamp Carra/Paletta Sami/Agger Riise/Aurelio

Pennant/Gerrard/Garcia Gerrard/Momo Alonso/Hamann Kewell/Zenden/Gonzales/Riise

Crouch/Pongolle/Fowler £12-15m striker

Quite a strong side and squad. And at an outlay of £20million (if a few of those prices are pushed up) its not bad.

Plus I haven't even mentioned selling any of Cisse, Morientes, Traore, Warnock, Mellor, Le Tallec, Potter, Kirkland, Dudek, etc which could raise a large amount of the cash to go towards that outlay.

Not all doom and gloom and shows we aren't far away or that much money away if we could work transfer dealings like that, which I think Rafa can.

that also assumes that the competition are going to stand still, which they aren't.

Not completely the case. But I agree that the competition will not stand still. But the main competition is Chavski and they can improve their team quality but not by much. They will more than likely improve their squad quality more. Even still I think that team outlined above would do very well to rival any team about. Getting the consistency and new signings working as a team is harder (same with any team this summer). But my point is that we aren't in such a dire situation. If the board can give rafa £30 million, then fantastic. But I just wanted to make the point that with a very realistic £20million, even without investment, could go a long way.

I just hope we don't get World Cupitits, and buy ever player who had a good half during a World Cup game. Nevertheless, I think Rafa is far too shrewd to be fooled by that.

That is a great shout. Looks like he's going to be off in the summer too:

Aurelio: Che stay complicated

By Mark Kendall - Created on 23 Feb 2006

Valencia star Fabio Aurelio has revealed contract talks with the club are still deadlocked and admits it will be complicated for him to stay at the club beyond this summer.

The left back, who can also operate in midfield, will become a free agent at the end of the season when his contract at the Mestalla expires.

The Che are still hoping to persuade him to sign a new deal, but talks with the player's agent Juan Figger stalled some weeks ago and have not progressed since.

Aurelio has now hinted it is unlikely he will continue with the club, insisting there are several obstacles preventing him from signing on.

"There is no news - from what I know there have been no new conversations," he stated.

"My future is with Valencia until the month of July and then we will see what happens. Nothing is impossible, but it (staying at Valencia) is complicated by many factors.

"The most important thing is the good form of the team and at the end of the season we could all be even more happy than we are now.

"It's in the hands of my agent, I have total faith in him and he will do the best thing for me for next season - I am concentrating on my football."

True, they aren't. Chelsea could go out and sign Ballack, Sheva and Joaquin but that does not necassarily mean we have to match them.

Rafa might buy 2 or 3 players for £15m, they click immediately and we have ourselves a title challenging side.

This season we've been a centre forward and a midfielder away from challenging them. Riise has performed very well at left back ( the current coaching staff have managed to tap into the potential of a few players who i thought were, to use racing language, ' exposed ' )

We could have used Agger and Krompamp earlier in the season but their signings bode well for next season. It's like having a head start - they'll be already settled in and we won't have to worry about a bedding in period after the World Cup.

A left back to improve competition in that position, an attacking midfielder and a centre forward ( which ould be £15m, could be £35m ) but also replacements for those players who'll leave. I'm expecting Traore, Cisse and Morientes to be sold.
