Suprised by Rafa lst night

he definetly made a balls up with the team selection, something he has done before , Yet he has in the past seen his error quickly and changed it..

 

Last night..he didnt, for some reason he waited and waited and waited when the game was just crying out for another inspirational substitution from Rafa, when he did make the change...it just didnt make sense, Cisse for kewell?????

 

By that stage, putting the pace off cisse on the wing wasnt gonna help us, we needed to tighten up the midfield, allow space for alonso and gerrard to move forward.

 

So why wasnt hamann brought on??? his presence would`ve settled the back 4, added some experience back there and allowed our creative players to push forward.

 

Morientes should`ve come off, Hamann on......Stick hamann alongside alonso and move Gerrard to the right and Garcia up alongside Crouch.

 

 

Easy to say in hindsight i know....yet i feel the above switch could`ve changed the game in our favour.

This thread's a massive anti-climax. I read the title and was hoping that you went into the shower and rafa jumped out at you and started singing "We are the Cheeky Girls".

I think that one difference, strange as it may sound, is that last year we were down to a very limited squad due to long term injuries and as a result those players such as Djimi, Biscan etc that came in would do a job as they were also getting a reasonable amount of time on the pitch elsewhere. Knowing their roles etc.

 

Didi is made for european games and didn't start, which puzzled me, but then again last year the same that has been aimed at Garcia would have been aimed at Kewell.

 

We lost to two very good goals arising from primarily one defensive mistake that left us chasing the game.

 

Not making changes is throwing someone like Huth up front. That's desperation. Rafa has a number of systems and he always trusts our players to be disciplined and drilled in training for such eventualities. It didn't come off because we lack that forward who can finish it and wingers who have the discipline to keep to the lines and stop the back four crowding out our two forwards.

 

Yet, when that happens we should have midfielders stepping up and penetrating the box - an impossibility when they are needed to help our wingers beat their man.

 

We shouldn't have lost but like Raf I'm looking towards the next game now.
