Rafa: Need more money! I don't know if I will get it

I don't know if these quotes are rehashed or from today but he is clearly using the media to pressure Parry to get his lazy a** out of barbados and find some dosh

Benitez admits there is still work to do

Rafael Benitez has given the strongest indication so far that he is not about to jump ship at Liverpool and take over at Real Madrid.

The Spanish boss admits he is bitterly disappointed with the loss of Liverpool's Champions League crown but points out he has strong plans for the club.

Benitez has added several youngsters to his squad as he builds for the future at Anfield.

Benitez: coveted by both Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

He believes bringing in youth will create a stronger emotional attachment between players and club in the future than would exist if he merely signed seasoned professionals.

Benitez said: 'Rick Parry (chief executive) and the board are working on solutions for the future, and I have confidence in them.

'I do not know if we have more or less money - but we are working on new ideas, working with the players we have and thinking about who we have out on loan.

'Then we will consider the transfer market and making use of what we already have here.

'This does not affect my own plans. We have signed Antonio Barragan, Gabriel Paletta and Daniel Agger, while Mark Gonzalez will be here in the summer - all very young players for the future.

'If as a manager you are thinking about your future then you cannot sign players who are 20 and 21 years old. It would be better for me to sign players who are 28 with experience.

'Then you can work with them for one year, two years and then finish. We are thinking about young players for the future, not for just one season.'

He added: 'The club are working to improve, they have been working for a couple of years trying to find some more money, I know they are looking and trying to find solutions.

'If they cannot I will try to do my best, for sure. It is difficult to say if you lose the Champions League whether things will be more difficult.

'As a manager you must work with the players that you have. We will try to improve the squad and the players with the money we have at this moment. If we had more money, yes it would be better.'

The build-up to Liverpool's shattering defeat by Benfica was dogged by speculation about Benitez's future and his clear agenda for the board to find funds to spend in the transfer market.

But the day after the nightmare loss of the European Cup at Anfield, Benitez was again insisting he is planning long term, not for a quick exit.

He said: 'I am only concerned with winning the next game and working as hard as possible for my club.

'I do not have a problem now, I want to improve my team this season and in the future.

'If you continue winning in the Champions League you will earn more money. We do not have that any more so we need to work with the players here and try to find the best solution in terms of money.

'Sometimes it is not just receiving a big amount of money that solves things, it is how you use your imagination with how you spend what you have.

'In football everything can change after one game. Now we need to think about the future but you cannot say we are worse than one day before playing Benfica.

'We are the same team and we need to think about the Premier League and FA Cup now.

'If you want to improve you can do it by working harder or by signing new players. We are working on buying good players for us, every big club is doing that, everyone needs to improve and change things if needed.

'But this is normal, it is nothing new, just the same for every club when you finish a season. It is the same every year.

'The players are not thinking about what happens in the future, they are only thinking about winning, we are professionals.'

Benitez has made it clear, however, that he will mark the end of Liverpool's great European adventure by accelerating the search for new players.

The Anfield hierarchy will have to come up with the cash for Benitez who said: 'We need to work harder looking for new players because we know what the situation is and what must be done.

'We are working now. The scouting department is working on improving the team.

'When you lose a game as important as this one, I prefer not to talk about new players or current players. Or what mistakes we made. I just want to change such things.

'In terms of our mentality, we need to be stronger. We must think about the future and work hard now.'

Benitez's words will not be lost on Parry, still searching for new investment to fund the proposed new stadium in Stanley Park, and chairman David Moores.

He's a frustrated man. You can't try and bluff the market if your aim is to be the top side, £6m just doesn't get you top quality. His only double figure choice is his best buy in terms of quality. You don't have to spend Chelsea cash, but to be up there, you need to spend double figures on players who can and will deliver top level performances 8/9 times out of 10.

Cissé VS Hyypiä

Who'd you pick?

Cissé VS Hyypiä

Who'd you pick?

Years difference, positional difference for a start. Yes there are always great players who turn out to be a bargain, and poor players who turn out to be way over-priced, but in general, you get what you pay for, and that's not just in football.

No Rafa, I think you'll find you've got it wrong. We don't want these expensive so-called 'quality' players, because everything is just great, and we spend more money than anyone, if you pretend enough, and we've got Rick Parry and Davey Moores to thank for that.

That depends on whose agenda it is. There is the Parry/Moores out camp and the "Rafa is leaving us anyway and here is his warning" camp. Linked arguments, of course. If I was him, I would also be sick of the continuing innuendo about his intentions.

I'm still pig sick about going out. I don't really care about anything else right now.

well at least we can agree on that

although one point - Rafa is far from sick of the innuendo although he's handling himself with text book professionalism

in no way do I think he's engineering it or fuelling it but any pressure on the board is good for him if it helps them get a bit more proactive- far outweighing any inconvenience he may suffer from it

and if it was Rafa who briefed the press on Friday "off the record" would you call that engineering/fuelling it?

i dont think there is a doubt that Rafa is partly fuelling this to put pressure on the board, which actually makes me feel alot easier

in general terms I'd have to say yes

I was thinking of something a bit more sinister/premeditated/confrontational but feck it, I actually don't know if he's fuelling it or not and tbh I kind of hope he is because in the end if he's successful in his tactic then the club will benefit

and if he's not then IMO he'll go at the end of next season, if the right offer comes along (financial, control over team affairs and transfer kitty)

there's more sh!te spewed about parry being allegedly a c*nt, cr@p, devious, self-interested, acting against liverpool's interests etc on this forum than any other topic IMHO.

whilst rafa may be putting pressure on the board, i don't get the impression he disrespects parry. same applied to houllier

That said, I am of the view that this "the deal has to be right" approach re investment is sounding increasingly tired, as I think the correct motto must be "a deal has to be concluded pretty imminently", being the best terms now available.

you've contardicted yourself

your desire to get a deal done now means one of your opening adjectives must describe Parry, unless he's come to the same conclusion as yourself, at the same time and is getting ready to do a deal as we speak

For some reason, people seem to ignore both these actions and words when they have an agenda.

YNWA forum lore :

When is an opinion not an opinion ? When it's an opinion that contradicts the alternative opinions of a section of posters. For them some of us don't have opinions, just 'agendas'.

Here's my secret agenda, that I subtley try and worm into every post I make : I want LFC to win, win, win, win, at all costs, all the f*cking time....and whatever I think might make that happen will form part of my 'agenda'.

Ignore action. Ignore words. Ignore facts. Just f***ing tedious at times. Three of the worst performers Wednesday night were Rafa buys yet you would think from some of the comments here that we never allow Rafa buy anyone.

Perhaps if he had more money he wouldn't be scrounging aorund for second choice buys. And I agree with leo people keep harping about how much money Rafa has spent while conveninetly ignoring how much he has recouped in sales.

You can trust me - Benitez

Mar 10 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ has appealed for Liverpool fans to trust his integrity as the club prepares for further speculation surrounding their manager's future.

Inter Milan will make an official approach for Benitez this summer, while Real Madrid are also hopeful of luring their former player to the Bernabeu.

Although the Anfield boss has made clear his intention to remain on Merseyside, he's stopped short of making any guarantees until the direction of the club becomes clearer.

The next two months will be crucial, but Benitez believes the supporters understand the situation.

"As a manager, you have a responsibility and you can't say a lot of things because you need to think about the interests of the club, the supporters and the play-ers," said Benitez..

"At the same time, you can never lie. I will never lie to the supporters or my players. If I can't say the truth, my idea is always it's better to not say anything at all.

"In this case, I have a lot of confidence in the future. We are a better team now than last season and now we must continue to keep progressing. I can not say the improvements we have made are enough, because we need to do more, but I have said many times before we have made good signings already for next season with Gonzalez and Paletta. We're always looking to improve even more.

"The most positive thing for me this week was the reaction of our supporters after the Benfica game. They were the winners. When you're losing at home it's difficult, but for them to sing my name and applaud the other team is amazing. "You don't see this in many stadiums. It's important to me to know I have the support of the people."

Liverpool head to Highbury on Sunday with Benitez feeling a draw could be enough to secure Champions League qualification next season.

Arsenal still trail the Reds by 11 points and Benitez wants a top four place guaranteed as soon as possible.

"Now we have two targets," he said."To finish second and to beat Birmingham and go on to win the FA Cup. That's the challenge for us now.

"Beating Arsenal would also be very important. We're eleven points ahead, so if we protect this difference or extend it, we should secure a top four place. It would be very difficult for the teams in fifth to catch us."

Sami Hyypia will test his hamstring before deciding if he can travel. John Arne Riise is still out.

Did anyone catch the thing on Five Live yesterday evening about 7.15pm? Some Spanish journalist, who is apparently close to Rafa was saying that Madrid had already approached him and he had knocked them back because he is concerned about the lack of autonomy/empowerment that he will have. He also said that Rafa has told Madrid that he may consider going to them if things start going badly for Liverpool, but not yet, as he he wishes to continue his long term project and its going well at the moment. In other words, he is shutting the door but not forever - which i think is understandable considering he's a Madrid lad. He reckons Rafa will give the board one more chance, i.e. this summer, to deliver the cash.

So at this point I'm pretty relieved and then he says that the only possible offer that may tempt him, in the relatively short term, is the one from Inter! Apparently they've also approached him and they have offered him full control, big money and a massive transfer kitty. He has said no to them as well but if the Board do not back him properly this summer then he may make a move! :o

Anyway, I'm not sure how reliable this journo is, if Rafa has used him to up the pressure on the board or if all of this is true, but its interesting!

Ha ! You've changed ya bloody tune Anny. You accused some of us of 'salivating' at the notion of Rafa putting the board under pressure the other day.

no way....re read my posts..I have consitantly said I think someone is briefing the press....and it is one of two people....either Madrid based journos trying to unsettle him..or his own people trying to get further cash

Where I have disagreed with people on here is that doomsday scenario that rafa will walk out unless a wad of cash is produced....I think privately the club must know what Rafa wants and who he wants in the summer and where I differ from people like your good self is that I believe he will get it..I heard yesterday that a deal for kuyt is almost done and that we are after one other striker...plus a defender (I assume a left back).....

I think Rafa will be here....I think he will manage Madrid one day also....

I think some on here are using this situation to hit Parry and Moores with a stick

Can you blame them? One of the best managers in europe at one of the most successful clubs in the world that has just won the european cup has to use the media to pressure the club to give him the finances he needs? Rafa is doing his job, and clearly thinks Parry and the club can do a better job supporting his needs. This investment crap has been going on for ages now with constant false promises. And as much as nostalgia would make us want to stay at anfield, if we are still there 10 years from now, the other clubs with their larger stadiums will leave us in the dust.
