floyd the barber Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 (edited) in recent years we have spent big cash on diouf, cisse and heskey.....Heskey certainly had his moments but for 11million i wouldnt say he was a complete success..And now its looking like we can add the name of Fernando Morientes to that list. Before that we spent big money on dean saunders...again he had his good games but certainly wasnt worth the huge amount of money we paid... So i would say we have to go all the way back to 87-88 with the combination of Beardsley and Alrdridge.. We have certainly been blessed in the last 10 years with owen and fowler, but the money spent on strikers has been a waste.. Edited March 9, 2006 by Winding Wheel
Crazy Horse Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I agree on Beardsley and Aldridge. Crouch will be a long-term success. But aside from those, we've wasted an awful lot of money on s****.
Boca Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Collymore had a couple of excellent seasons. He and Robbie were outstanding together.
surf Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Beardsley and Aldridge, both more than 15 years ago. Surely we can come up with someone more recent. Collymore is a good shout. Cost a lot, but we got most of it back.
chrisbonnie Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 and we thought it was our goalkeeper that was the bogey position seeing as we`ve now sorted that out, Rafa has to wave his magic wand yet again, anyone for Fernando Torres
Knox_Harrington Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 and we thought it was our goalkeeper that was the bogey position seeing as we`ve now sorted that out, Rafa has to wave his magic wand yet again, anyone for Fernando Torres I really hope we don't sign Torres.
XabisBadFoot Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I really hope we don't sign Torres. Why's that Knoxy lad..??
Koller49 Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I really hope we don't sign Torres. I feel exactly the same - whenever I've seen him play he looks/acts like a complete nob.
Knox_Harrington Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Why's that Knoxy lad..??He needs more time than Morientes. Seems to take an age to react and needs space. He'd get eaten alive in this league. And he seems moody about it.
AE Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Bought some Welsh guy from Juve after Aldo didn't we?He was OK. So talking of buying back Welsh guys....

We have certainly been blessed in the last 10 years with owen and fowler, but the money spent on strikers has been a waste..He may not have been quite the player he was pre-Juve but Rush was still a key part of Kenny's side that won the league in 89-90, finished second in 88-89 and 90-91 and won the Cup in 89. Bought some Welsh guy from Juve after Aldo didn't we?He was OK. So talking of buying back Welsh guys.... You beat me to it.
Knox_Harrington Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Stan Collymore and Karl-Heinz Riedle were good buys on their own terms (Collymore did well and we got £7m for him, Riedle was massive for Owen and was a very good player). Still think Crouch will be a good buy.
AE Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 You beat me to it. Only with Joey Joe Joe Jr Shabadoo's help
The Mighty Kemlyn Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Wasn't the Collymore signing the last time we broke the Brititsh record for a striker?
floyd the barber Posted March 9, 2006 Author Posted March 9, 2006 Collymore i believe we played 8million for and really.....he had one good season and somehow we nearly got all our money bk.. Though on the playing field i wouldnt say he was a success.. Ian Rush is a different story really and should be exempt Also players like Reidle,Camara, litmanen were bought what seemed to me as stop-gaps/experienced players to tide us over.. im really talking about the big money buys we have had...not one a genuine success... Heskeycollymoresaundersdioufcissemorientes thats a ton of money spent....
Guest Anders Honoré Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 for 13 mio recouped, and thus a net outlay of 6 mio + wages I think they were worth the investment. we're not a selling club so losses on players sales are to be expected.
