they released it too early... there weren't enough in the crowd to see it when it first took a lap... and the kop looked a tad sparce so it didn't glide the way it should.. other than that it looked good :)

Off course not. The Liverbird isnt a real bird.

Err, the Liverbird IS an eagle.

Err, no, the Liverbird is not an Eagle.

Firstly, it is a mythical bird, but if it is based on any 'real' creature it is a cormorant, and in no way an eagle.

edit: sorry, didn't mean to sound quite to sarcy.

No it isn't incorrect. The Liverbird as used by Liverpool FC is indeed a a mythical bird that is based on a Cormorant. Hundreds of years before Liverpool FC was created, the town of Liverpool may have used an eagle as its crest but that was long since replaced by the cormorant when Liverpool FC came into being.

The whole shape of the liverbird is nothing like that of an eagle. It's neck is too long, it's tail is the wrong shape, it's beak is the wrong shape, even it's stance is not one of an eagle. About the only thing eagle-like are it's feet (but then it's legs are far too long for an eagle) and the fact it has feathers.

Size wise I thought it fell between two stools meself. If you are going to have a BIG banner then I dont think it was big enough. It wasn't long enough for a start. In real life I didn't think the red shading quite worked either. I was open minded about the gold colouring of the liverbird but I ended up not liking that either.

You've nicely covered both theories.

The Liver Bird's stance is very like a cormorant drying its wings. Cormorants are one of a number of seabirds that don't have waterproof feathers so stand with wings outstretched to dry off before diving again. It can also raise its head feathers to resemble closely the Liver Bird crest

But the other theory is that it's a stylised eagle. In heraldry, a bit of licence is taken with the precise morphology of animals.

I think the cormorant one is more likely as there were likely to have been many of them in the area when Liverpool was developing centuries ago although, as someone who takes an interest in nature, I've never seen a cormorant in the Mersey over several decades

the red reminded me of the red on our home shirt a few years back, where it was more a dark pink... or a red that had faded in the sunshine
