Ombudsam Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Those two could rule Europe. Not this year obviously but they were immense today. Alonso has developed pace and an engine and was right back on form. FA cup it is.
Guest rickyjohn Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 must have watched a different game to me then mate....

Alonso has developed pace and an engine and was right back on form. FA cup it is. Totally agree. Gerrard had to do his own job, Garcias job and Kewell's job at times tonight. If we can keep him in the middle with Xabi we will win the majority of midfield battles we play
Gerrardrules Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Alonso was great today. Problem for him was the wingers weren't. And the strikers neither.
Tones Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Those two could rule Europe. Not this year obviously but they were immense today. Alonso has developed pace and an engine and was right back on form. FA cup it is. Agree. With strong players left and right of them they could make the best centre midfield partnership we have ever had. They were great tonight.
lawrie Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 In defence of Kewell, he's played an awful lot of consecutive games for someone just coming back from a nasty injury - I expect to a lesser degree you could say the same for Garcia
Ombudsam Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 Agree. With strong players left and right of them they could make the best centre midfield partnership we have ever had. They were great tonight. Kewell and Garcia weren't at it tonight even though luis deffo should have scored. If they had been we might have won because one of them might have scored because it must be their responsibility to do so as it's not our strikers as keeps being emphasised
G Richards Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Gerrard and Alonso are great players. I want to say that before I make my point. I thought there were a lot of holes through the middle tonight. Part of that is because we were chasing the game, part of it is becasue of Stevie's energetic style and trying to influence the game all over the3 pitch. We ended up getting picked off by Benfica. And I feel a fair few teams in Europe would have picked us off too. IMO we look a lot more solid with Stevie on the right, and a central pairing or Alonso and Hamann/Sissoko. Don't slate me for saying this - it's just my honest view!

Hamann should have started and much as I hate Gerrard on the right, in hindsight that would have been the better option.

Nice finish from miccoli by the way. i've rated him for a bit

Garcia I felt hid for most of the game. He'll be out in the summer I think, reputation still high and a saleable asset.
Kite Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Those two could rule Europe. Not this year obviously but they were immense today. Alonso has developed pace and an engine and was right back on form. FA cup it is.Agree too. Best thing tonight was watching Alonso's performance, easily one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment, and seeing Gerrard back charging about again full of drive. We've had a strange year, better in the Premiership but less so in Europe. The FA cup would be a deserving reward overall.
anfieldgaz Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 One of the best games Alonso has played for us tonight! Gerrard to me still didnt take the game by the scruff of the neck as a captain should.
Bailo Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Agree with that - we missed Sissoko tonight. He bosses midfieldsIts the pace he gave to the team I think more than anything. He allows us to play sooo much quicker. It was so slow today it was embarassing. "I'm going to CROSS THIS BALL IN NOW, ARE YOU READY?"

Bailo Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 that was us telling the referee so he wouldn't book us for doing it too quickly Surreal that wasn't it? Thought Stevie and Xabi were beyond criticism tonight, excellent.
Ostrich Man Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Those two could rule Europe. Not this year obviously genius sammy.....not much gets past you eh
Nebraska Red Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 for me, those 2 plus Carra and Finnan were the only outfield players to come out of the game with any credit. the rest were somewhere between average and awful. you take 3 players out of our best team and that performance is what you get. we missed Hyppia, Riise and Sissoko so much today.

Cobs Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 thought we played ok meself - ran out of ideas in the second half when they just sat so deep but really we paid the penalty for a lacklustre first leg and scoring no away goal. First 20-30 mins tonight we played some good stuff and did everything but score, wasn't our night tonight, we move on. Thought our fans were terrific tonight, btw. Made me proud.
