I suspect that Benitez will look for someone taller and stronger, who can hold the ball up - and score goals

not easy to find such a player, granted, and I'd be tempted to pay the money for a guaranteed goalscorer alone. But Rafa might think that £18m (or whatever) is too much for someone who isn't exactly what he's looking for

should we really? 18m?

It's not gonna be that much and even if it is i don't care. You can't win trophies without goals and we don't have many goals. And yes i know what we won last season.

it won't be 18mill and like you i can't think of this ideal player. He wanted him in the summer

how much will it be? Why would the Barcodes sell for less than he's worth? Is there any truth in the release clause rimours and if so, how much is specified? And even if we did invoke the clause, would we be censured for 'tapping-up' as we were with Ziege when he told us about his clause?

Benitez would have taken Owen at the right price - but once again he's not likely to be available at the right price

that's the figure that gets bandied about, but no-one knows if it's true

Dave Usher, Bascombe and Elisha have all said its true so i'd say its got some mileage. Even Rushie was in the Echo saying we should get Owen for £12m

fair enough on the first 3 ... I doubt Rushie knows any more than you or I though

Yep, not like he'd know anyone connected with the club or even Michael Owen personally or anything.

by 'the club' do you mean Newcastle or LFC?

as for Michael, I'm sure he'd divulge intimate details of his contract so that Rush could blurt them out all over the press

Good grief, I give up.

I wonder if we could temp Ade Akinbiyi away from Sheffield Utd for £10 million...

My initial thoughts on the striker situation would be to get shot of Cisse and Nando (Obviously at a loss), bring back Pongolle and Owen so as that our strikeforce reads: Owen, Crouch, Fowler, Pongolle. All a bit too ideal I know but I think there's goals in that.

How about Karl Fletcher, scored a hatful for Harchester United. He might be on the cheap. Bit of a distraction in the dressing room but we've got Carra to sort that out.

I'm still gunning for Darren Bent. D'u reckon Charlton would let him go...? If so - how much for..? £8-£9m..??

And Kevin Nolan is a must. He's a great player and a top guy too..!

That list doesn't fill me with optimism to be honest. I think 12 million for someone who is prone to injury isn't really that good a piece of business. Robbie may get us a few goals but he is unlikely to improve significantly over the next season or so. I see Crouch as nothing more than a squad player, being able to offer something different in the last 20 minutes of a game and Pongolle may come back to be a really useful player but would you at this stage of our development pin all your hopes on him?

I don't think it's unrealistic at all. The only problem with Owen coming back (in footballing terms) is that he's injured a lot when he's the regular starting striker. So for a good 3 months of the season, we'd be limited to Crouch, Fowler, and Pongolle. There's some considerable uncertainty in the strike rate of our strikers in that scenario. Granted they can't do any worse than this year.
