intense enigma Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 (edited) Just finished watching it. Ironically, it was also the year i was born . Watching Fagan walk on the pitch to take Keegans track top, Emlyn Hughes and Moncur at the toss, Shankly flanked by Sir Bob and Ronnie Moran urging the team on throughout the match, Shanks turning to the crowd to celebrate our goals and looking anxious despite us being 3-0 up, McDonald ballooning his shot towards the end when clean through , Hughes lifiting the FA Cup....brilliant, absolutely brilliant.....What a great match it was. Anyone here went to Wembley to watch the match? It must have been a sensational outing. Edited March 3, 2006 by intense enigma

intense enigma Posted March 3, 2006 Author Posted March 3, 2006 (edited) Agree. The goal seems perfectly valid to me. How it was given offside I dont know. But you never know we might just have a repeat of that this year. Can you imagine Michael Owen mouthing off telling us not to bother turning up because we can't score goals and for Heighway, Keegan and Toshack read Kewell, Fowler and Crouch But unfortunately, Robbie wont be able to do a Keegan some of us were there. Lucky buggers..... But it's not my fault for being born almost a month after the final Edited March 3, 2006 by intense enigma

Good game, particularly as a lot of pundits thought they could actually beat us with "Supermac" up front. In fact we won at a canter - never got out of second gear. In fairness to their fans, was chatting to a few of them in central London afterwards and they were very philosophical and took defeat very well

Guest Jude Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 The day i became a Liverpool fan. Watched the match in a small seaside town called Ardglass in Co Down with a few Liverpool fans and from that day onwards i was a Liverpool fan myself.Terry Mc Dermott who played for Newcastle that day himself went on to become a Liverpool legend. Also ended up legless that day and near fell into the harbour
miceal Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 Everyone has known ever since that Alec Lindsay's goal should have been allowed. I was ranting about it at the time to my dad. As I was coming up 13, he wasn't impressed by my liberal use of Anglo-Saxon. Alec Lindsay ran a modest miners' pub in Leigh (near Wigan) for many years, although I think he left some time ago. Hard to imagine it with premiership players these days, but that was a typical post-career career in those days. Can you see Stevie going back to Huyton to pull pints in the Bluebell?
floyd Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 The day i became a Liverpool fan. Was the first ever match I have memories of (6 1/2 years old). And you don't become a fan of Liverpool, your'e born one.

Senrab_nhoj Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 Twas the day I became a Red too... First game of footie I watched on TV after watching england 1 poland 1 (1973) and was hooked from the moment i saw 'us' play the geordies off the park.....

Also ended up legless that day and near fell into the harbour Now that you've mentioned it....back in the 70s and 80s live football in this part of the World was almost unheard off bar a few matches from the local league (which was admittedly good to watch at that time. Now it's s***). As such club football never received the kind of coverage given to the World Cup and so it was the likes of Brazil and Argentina that were familiar to me in football when i first learnt about the sport. I never had the opportunity to watch any league matches other than a few higlights in the news. But the first club football match i watched in full was one of the best things that could've happened to me. The 1981 European Cup final when we beat Madrid (thanks to my uncle who was working with a local Tv station at that time and got me the tape of the whole match the following year). My favourite colour has always been Red so when the team in Red emerged victorious, I just fell in love with them and at the tender age of 8, i became a Liverpool fan. Well, it could've been worse.....my first experience could've been Everton v Rapid Vienna........and if that was the case, I can just picture myself right now doing some serious soul searching with efcrmagic Edited March 3, 2006 by intense enigma
Guest Portly Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 After the final whistle, the BBC camera crew went on the pitch to speak to the players. "What did you think of Malcolm Macdonald?" the interviewer asked Phil Thompson. "He didn't get a f****n kick!" said Pinnochio jubilantly.

I still think that display was one of the most dominant in a Cup Final. If I would have known then that Shanks would retire a few months later I would have savoured every second. As a 13 year old I was just happy we got in despite going without tickets, the rest was a blur on pure adrenalin. Edited March 3, 2006 by Bootle Buck
intense enigma Posted March 4, 2006 Author Posted March 4, 2006 a traffic jam when you're already late Thank God for the glorious 80s
Murphman Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 I was there, smack bang level with Lindsay when he shot. He was a mile onside. I remember the team running around with the cup afterwards and Lindsay falling arrse over head over a camera cable. Anybody else recall that?
Andy Mac Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 I was there, too. I was 7- the first of many, many glorious visits to Anfield Road South !!!!
Paul B Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 Bob Paisley was always a good judge of a man. Seeing Terry McDermott sitting inconsolable in tears on the Wembley pitch that day was an image that stuck in the canny Geordie's mind. He thought, "There's a man that cares." Once McDermott's abilities as a player matched his passion for the game, Paisley knew it was a no-brainer and he had no doubts Macca was going to be a Liverpool legend.
tomski Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 I remember in the papers leading up to the game Malcolm Macdonald spouting off about what he was going to do with us. Ugly as feck with terrifying sideburns he was completely anonymous. I travelled down with my dad and grandad (who incidentally started on the guiness at breakfast time ). Very happy memories of a happier time (aside from the arab -israeli war, the imminent threat of nuclear destruction, crap food, terrible clothes etc.)
Liverbobs Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 I had just turned 11 years old and hadn't really supported anybody until then I just liked individual players, my dad who is a staunch Man utd fan kept trying to make me support them but I saw this game, was TOTALLY knocked out and became a Liverpool fan from that day.
Guest RALa Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 I was there. i'll never forget the geordies on the tube to Wembley telling us how "Supermac" was gonna get a hat trick and how we didn't stand a chance. when an old scouser in the corner of the carriage we were in said " he's so good that Malcolm McDonald they've put up a monument to him in Liverpool" all the geordie fan cheered, then he said "they put ears on the mersey tunnel" we all fell about laffin JFT96YNWA

I picked Liverpool cos they played in red and stuck with them from then on.

Thompson was just a kid back then yet raked his studs down his shin in the first minute and generally put Supermac in his pocket.
