i don't think Rio has let England down playing for England in the major tournaments and can understand why the manager has stuck with him.

 

Yes i think Carra is a better defender than Rio but if John Terry is a certain starter , which it looks like he is, then i think Rio's pace is important alongside him. Rio is still a good defender, despite the slaggin he gets on here. Our strikers couldn't get a goal against United with him in the team this season, although maybe that's not saying much. He also carries more of a goal threat than Carra - and we all know how important set pieces can be...

One for the real defending, one to at least have the ability to bring the ball through and into midfield, especially with the midfield England have. Seems a natural balance. Carra is actually competing with Terry, Rio with Woodgate.

Oh no doubt they could play together, but if you have the choice, as Eriksson does, and Benitez is moving to with his signings, you'd play Carra alongside a ball player. Terry is in a similar role at his club. It's about being able to be more than solid at the back, it's about being able to control the game from the back as well.

carra may be a bit rudimentary in his playing style on occasion but then in istanbul he sprints fairly deep into milan half and plays a beautiful ball into baros' feet and the rest, as they say....
