Who's this Liverpool player mentioned?

Just seen a short letter in the national press today which says, "How many people remember the name of the Liverpool FC player whose career was ended at Old Trafford by a rogue two-footed tackle by Gary Neville - unnoticed by the officials and by the sports media? The man's leg is still held together with metal pins" I've racked my brains and have come up with zilch. Anyone know who the writer is referring to?

I seem to remember him catching someone like Redknapp with a tackle near the touchline but it couldn't be considered career endingas Jamie went on to play for Spurs and Southampton.

Vegard Heggem perhaps

Hamstrings, wasn't it ?

The last straw was some kind of Heel/tendon problems he just couldn't shake off. No idea why they are talking about though.

I'm sure we'd all remember.
