Agger set for Anfield recall Feb 24 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DANIEL AGGER is set to be handed another opportunity to impress The Kop on Sunday as Jamie Carragher serves a one-match ban against Manchester City.

The Danish midfielder  has only featured once since his £5.5m arrival from Brondby.

But he's ready to fill the void against Stuart Pearce's side as the Reds seek to recover from the disappointing midweek defeat to Benfica.

Agger, who has recovered from a slight injury scare, has trained normally this week and is expected to partner Sami Hyypia.

Carragher misses the game having picked up his fifth booking of the season during the FA Cup win over Manchester United.

I reckon Sami & Riise will tuck in and look after him. We should have enough quality to turn these over. Just need to find the back of the f***in net.

BOSS: AGGER OR DJIMI TO REPLACE CARRA

Paul Eaton 24 February 2006

Rafael Benitez has admitted he must choose between Daniel Agger and Djimi Traore to fill Jamie Carragher's shoes against Manchester City tomorrow.

Carragher will sit out the clash with Stuart Pearce's men after collecting five bookings this season and earning an automatic one game ban.

Danish new boy Agger has recovered from a minor injury and is fit to play while Traore also gives Benitez another option.

"Both players and training hard and playing well so it's a difficult decision to pick one of them to partner Sami," he said.

"I have confidence in either of them doing the job though. Carra is a big player for us but I am sure the team we pick will be good enough to get the three points."

Benitez also confirmed Robbie Fowler won't be involved tomorrow because of an agreement made with City following the striker's switch last month.

"City were very helpful to us in organising the transfer of Robbie and so we came to an understanding with them that Robbie won't play in this game," added the Reds' boss.

The lad Samaras looks very very good from what i've seen. Strong in the air, quick and with plenty of skill

We might miss Carra a fair bit tomorrow

I said when they bought him that we should buy him and leave fowler be. I was joking as i'd never seen him but i'll claim it if the lad continues to impress. Had a comedy miss v charlton

Though he did OK, not outstanding and was at fault for that Samaras chance when he spooned it wide, but as was said in one of the Vidic gloating threads, CB if a difficult position to adjust to a new league in. Not everyone can be a Sami Hyypia.

It was probably a good game for him to get used to the premiership in, he was not over exposed and Sami had a very good game next to him. He looked like he could be a thread from set peices as well.

Sure he'll be fine.

D'oh, didn't see that other thread.

Another promising performance out of the lad. Looked rather laboured at the beginning but after watching on, I realized it was just the way he moved, quite awkward but always very calm. Couple of dodgy situations when I thought he could've been more assertive in dealing with but he's only still 21. Picked out some very nice passes with that left peg of his, despite that one occasion when the lack of movement in front of him led to him giving the ball away when trying to find Finnan. Very assured on the ball and is much tougher than his lanky frame suggests me thinks. I would like to see him play alongside Carra as I think it's a much more balanced pairing.
