Zonal Marking

...to go absolutely f***ing nuts at some t*** at work who puts last night's goal down to zonal marking?

I just absolutely flipped at him because he came up to me and said, "Unlucky last night but those sorts of things will happen with zonal marking."

WHAT A f***ING NUMBNUT. What did last night's goal have to do with zonal marking? It was a sodding freekick!

We've conceded 2 goals so far in the European Cup this season.

We have an amazing defensive record in the league.

I f***ing hate w*****s who spout s**** they've heard on the BBC. Just f*** off.

It was due to Sami going down in instalments instead of challenging Luisao.

No defensive system is infallible, our defensive record shows that the Zonal system is working as well if not better than any other, it's just something for the pundits to talk about... so no it isn't wrong.

aye. sami got completely on the wrong side of luisao. decent free-kick but i'd expect us to defend it better than that.

I just don't understand how Sami could let that happen. He was watching the ball the whole way and Rafa said we had seen them try and the free kick before.

Poor defending, but it's got f*** all to do with zonal marking.

so did Rafa - seeing as he has seen them make that move before!

Did anyone notice that after the goal, the camera flashed onto the bench and Pako was shouting 'Luisao, Luisao, Luisao' - as if they had pinpointed him as the danger from that free kick and he has still been allowed to score.

It was a bad goal to give away, especially with the ball coming in straight like that. It was something our defenders should have dealt with. These things happen though and hopefully we will t*** them in the second leg.

In the post match interview Rafa said they'd seen them do that free-kick twice, all the players knew about it - that's why he he was so pissed off with them

He also screwed up his notes and threw them into the dugout. They were all rightly very pissed off.

'Zonal marking' seems to be the new rent-a-quote. Hansen and Gray have both been on that moronic bandwaggon recently and it sounds lile it's now spread to the wider muppet community.

I can't see the reasoning behind it and I can't imagine what it would be like to play in it (or against it) but the results seem to be excellent.

Whether that's because few opponents (yet) know how to deal with it remains to be seen.

why are people blaming sami? it clearly wasnt his fault. sami had his man at the back post and it was finnan who let his man run in and sami had to run around and do his best to try and challenge him.

finnan was at fault.

the zonal marking system clearly works as our defence is one of the best in england and europe but i think if the players don't do their job in the zonal system it leaves teams very vulnerbale to set pieces.

it very much depends on the players ability to be able to concentrate for 90 minutes and play the zonal system to the letter

Which, if you apply it to man-marking, is precisely the same. If a player loses his man in man-marking, they are just as vulnerable, no?

Every goal we concede it's down to "zonal marking" if you listen to the pundits- the fact is, all teams concede from set pieces at some point. That's life.

Of course every goal we concede from a set piece is down to " zonal marking " because that's what we use at set pieces.

That freekick last night was a set play the team knew about and had prepared for. Trouble is, they messed up and it cost them. Sami got caught wrong side and then fell over.

We've been caught out a few times by someone running in from deep ( something we do very little of when we're attacking. Kewell did it against the Mancs and almost scored ) and that is the downside to our style of marking but it's not going to happen very often.

If we were scoring our fair share from set plays it wouldn't be an issue.

Whereas if the players don't do their job in a man-to-man system we'd be...vulnerable to set pieces.

We SHOULD have defended better than that. As RAFA said, they saw that precise free kick on the video of Benfica, yet they forgot all about it on the night. He was furious. As I've said before, doesn't matter how good the defence is, if your strikers can't score it nullifies everything. Benfica were poor yet we couldn't put them away. Don't think the return is a fait accompli because it isn't.

Tell them the facts about the premiership:

Fact 1

Chelsea goals conceded 16

Liverpool 17

next best Arsenal 21

next best Bolton 23

Fact 2

We have done this without spending £500 million

Fact 3

This is partially down to zonal marking

Fact 4

Every time some other team let's in a goal, why don't they say "that's because they DON'T have zonal marking?"

Fact 5

They are c***s who don't have a clue and Rafa is a genius whose shoes they are not fit to lick.

total nonsense. why would sami "have his man at the back post" in a zonal system ffs?

of course players who dont do their job in man/man marking leaves teams vulnerable.

but opposing teams can consciously rehearse to exploit the zonal system by leaving players in the 6 yard box and knowing that if the zonal system isnt working properly, their man will get a free shot on goal.

That may well be roughly what Chelsea did for the first goal they scored against us (Gallas).

I don't think the plan is for 4 of our defenders to attack the same ball, though.

It's a tautology really to say that 'if the system doesn't work then it causes problems'. Experience increasingly shows that it DOES work as often, or even more often, than other systems.

It was down to lack of concentration.

There was only one spot the ball was going to be played in (if the taker was accurate), and it was into that area. There didn't seem to be a left footed player around to take the shot, so they were always going to swing it there.

Very disappointing, but we had to do the same against Olympiacos last season, so it's not a huge worry.

If you see the replay of the incident from behind the free taker, it becomes clear that it was Sami's fault sadly. He is beside (and hence marking Luisao) and starts actually slightly ahead of Luisao but then, rather than play the ball, he slows and tries to block off Luisao, probably intending to let the ball go out wide. However, Luisao is able to push past, leaving Hyypia crumbling, and gets a free header. If Hyypia had gone to play the ball he either would have cleared successfully or at least challenged for the ball, probably enough to prevent Luisao having such an easy opportunity. What struck me is that if it had been Carra instead of Hyypia I think it wouldn't have been a goal as I've rarely seen Carra do anything other than play the ball in situations like that. It was an error but probably the only one he made. Its hugely f***ing frustrating we got punished for it. (And, of course, bugger all to do with Man Marking).

no i still maintain it was finnans fault. hyppia was marking the man at the back, then this other guy ran in behind finnan, sami came across to try to get to him but too late.

even on tv after they replayed it a few times to see who was at fault and they all said finnan. which was a damn shame as he had a cracking game apart from that
