Neville calm over Anfield abuse

Manchester United defender Gary Neville has played down the abuse he received from Liverpool fans.

 

The Red Devils skipper incensed Liverpool supporters with his celebrations at Rio Ferdinand's late winner in The Premiership clash between the two sides last month.

 

And the Anfield faithful took their opportunity to respond during the 1-0 victory over United on Saturday, booing Neville every time he touched the ball.

 

There was also a mixed reaction when Alan Smith was stretchered off with a leg injury, but Neville insists it is all part of thegame.

 

"I have no reaction to the Alan Smith taunts," Neville told BBC GMR. "These things are part of football and you have to accept them.

 

"We are getting a little bit too carried away with shouts from the crowd. These are minor incidents.

 

"When you come to Liverpool, you expect to be given a tough time. Do you expect their supporters to smile at us and say 'go on lads, enjoy yourself out there?' That is not the way it is.

 

The England star believes that the behaviour of the Liverpool fans is merely a reflection of the rivalry between the two sides, and revealed that the negative reception towards him came as no surprise at all.

 

"This is football and it is important to a lot of people from both sides," he stressed.

 

"I nail my colours to the mast and I expect and accept it is not going to be accepted by the Liverpool fans.

 

"I have been to Anfield a lot down the years. The reception was not too bad and as long as the abuse doesn't boil over onto the pitch, I don't have a problem with it. It is part of the game."

i have to say i had a lot more respect for Gary Neville at the final whistle than i had at the start. he just put his head down and had a pretty decent game. and his comments there are spot on, armchair fans spouting off about matchgoers handing out abuse to players gets on my fecking nerves. i would love to see how some of the fans posting on this board would react if they could get a real insight into the Kop and the fans that stood there in the 70's and 80's.

It's refreshing to see someone tell it like it is. Fair play to him really. He dislikes us, we dislike him - but in a weird way I think there's a grudging mutual respect.

There was a great article early this season about how great it is that players that fans can identify with (like Carragher, Neville and Terry) are finally getting the recognition they deserve and becoming favourites. The other 2 are still ****s obviously but I do have some respect for them. All 3 have occasionally stepped out of line but they haven't forgotten their roots. They are the names our kids should have on the back of their shirts, the people to inspire the youngsters.

 

A comment attributed to 'Our New Friend Gary' not mentioned in that article is "football is important to the people of Manchester and Liverpool". Nailed it.

I've read in a couple of places that there's no chance of a ban, just a fine, as the ref put in his report that if he'd seen the incident he would have booked Neville. If a ban was a possibility he would have been dealt with through the fast-track system.

I remember many a chorus of "die you Barsteward die" as an opposing player lay injured. It was just part of the banter of the game. Too much polital correctness these days.

So he ran 60 yards and kissed his badge (when he found it) in front of our fans when they scored, so what. Doesn't deserve to be banned for that. For being an ugly Utd loving fecker yes, but not for that.
