David Hodgson Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 I'm told by a very good source (no, really) that this summer will see us seek to secure Defoe (big surprise), SWP permanently (no, really, again), Victor, and another centre-back. These are obviously far from certainties but strong likelihoods, I'm told. fWIW this comes from the same place as my previous Fowler and swp info.
Guest The Defender Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 We NEED to take a gamble... and spend 15-25million on a striker.. For me... Fernando Torres... with the spanish armada already at our club i believe he can be persuaded.
Knox_Harrington Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 (edited) We were going for Defoe as the window closed and Wright-Phillips was really happy in the north-west. He might consider Arsenal for all I know but I think he'd prefer to come home. He used to go out in Liverpool pretty regularly. Victor's contract is up in the summer I think. So he'd be on a free. These are hardly implausible shouts (not that Hodgson is to be doubted). EDIT: The centre half could well be the Argentinean lad we've been linked with today as well. R A Softlad Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 I heard Spurs offered him to us for £5m + Cissé.

It might be because I'm Dutch and I normally see more Dutch football then foreigners. He scores so easily. Yesterday he did it again. Who the feck had heard of RVN before he signed for Utd and look what he has done.
Gerrardrules Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 RVN did exactly the same what Ronaldo did at psv before him. Scoring loads of goals. Being topscorer of the Dutch league easily with 20+ goals. The same Kuyt is doing right now. Again.
Guest prudent Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 It looks like Gabriel Palletta will join us before the summer. Liverpool.no reports that he is coming over to Liverpool on sunday for a medical if all goes as scheduled. The club president has publicly said that there are some minor issues to iron out.

Lee W Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I would hope we're holding out to see if there may be better options available in the summer before going for Defoe.

Especially since Victor was pretty average on his trials anyway. Saw Victor play last night. He's bigger than I thought but looked at best a stop gap until the summer.
Cunny Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 there's been some b******s spouted in this threaddid my eyes deceive me or was anny road described as a 'respected poster'?
Behind Enemy Lines Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Maldini said: So would I, without hesitation. I wonder if Cisse's wages were a factor? He's meant to be on a pretty hefty wedge isn't he? We#d probably have to pay him off. Either way it costs, with debatable value for money
Romario Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 We sound worse than spurs with all these later than late offers and deals breaking down. Liverpool nearly signed Defoe but it was too late. Liverpool nearly signed Simao but it was too late. Liverpool nearly signed SWP but it was too late. Poor bloody Raffa. L19red said: as the subject of Cisse's departure has come up, anyone got any info on who is out of the door in the summer? at least one of the goalies has to go, but who else? morientes maybe, and if fowler shapes up and we sign defoe then where does that leave pongolle and le tallec?I reckon Cisse, Morienties,Mellor, LeTellec, Cheryou, Traore, Dudek and perhaps Pongo if he can't get games to prove himself at Blackburn. A potential 8 players. We'll need to replace 6 of them with quality starting with up front.
Bailo Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Can't understand the anti-Defoe feeling on here. He's had a difficult season this season (still scored twice in his first start for yonks) but that's down to Mido being #1 with Jol + A.N.Other, which has invariably been Keane, as he's in good form at the moment. I've not seen Kuyt play loads but I have seen Defoe and I think he's absolute top class.
Gravy Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Am I the only one who doesn't think Defoe is all that? An to take a £10 million loss on Cisse? Let's just hope he has a great World Cup a la Baros in the Euros. Sell him to Marseille and get more money for him and then buy Owen back. Looks like we could be on the threshold of another "nearly" summer then.

jimmylibel Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Have to say I can't understand the preference for Defoe over Owen either. Looks like we could be on the threshold of another "nearly" summer then. This summer will be our most important for years. I think if we fail AGAIN to pick up the right players the momentum could well be lost and I think the rot will slowly creep in. Hyypia will need replacing and players like Gerrard and Alonso will see us going backwards as we certainly won't be going forwards if on the last day of the transfer window yet again we're bidding left right and centre with Parry (*fingers crossed behind his back) is counting down the clock. We'll need a CB perhaps another LB a RM and two quality forwards. That's 5 quality players, not ones for the future or players with potential. We already have that. For me Crouch and Morienties are great backup/cover if we had two strikers in the Owen/Defoe/AJ mode.

Coyler Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Preferably one with two fully-functioning hamstrings.
Flasher Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Coyler said: Preferably one with two fully-functioning hamstrings. Exactly. I don't expect Owen to ever play for a big club ever again. (serious trophy winning side that is) England is all he's got and will have now. After Sven has gone I doubt he'll be so secure there either.
