jon_hall Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Any of the normal rabble know anywhere decent in Pieland then? I know a decent pub for beer near the bus station and that's about it. There are a couple on Wallgate, one at Wigan Pier (see they even get pie in there) and rumours of a couple near the ground which will no doubt be packed.

The ground is next to a retail park........bit like Bolton's. There's a pub on that opposite the cinema.........dunno if it's a footy pub. Presume so. Bit like a brewers fayre gaff though. Struggling in general for decent pubs in Wigan. The town is in a time warp.
Tim Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 according to www.footballgroundguide.co.uk (which may not be that accurate) the red robin (near the cinema complex) is the main away fans pub.
Dan Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 according to www.footballgroundguide.co.uk (which may not be that accurate) the red robin (near the cinema complex) is the main away fans pub. Thats the one
Scally Bob Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 I live in Wigan so know every boozer in town. The Red Robin is a Wacky Warehouse and is absolute garbage. If coming by train from Lime Street turn left/from Kirkby turn right down Wallgate until you come to the Wigan Pier complex and there's a pub there called the Orwell. Proper beer, not just the usual fizz. If coming from the M58/M6 through Standish as you get to a mini roundabout there's a big pub on the left called the Cherry Gardens. My local, nice place. If you come in Haydock way there's nothing around there, you'll need to get into town. If you're in town the centre is a bit wild west and the locals think it's still 1973 so I'd swerve the kiddies pubs around there. If you walk down where Debenhams is and keep going in that direction you will see a tapas bar on the left (just across the dual carriageway) and just past there on the right is the Royal Oak. Excellent proper beer. Or you could go down to where the bus station is and there's the Anvil. Proper beer. Or if you find the Technical College (just at the back of the market) you can follow Frog Lane to the Pear Tree. If you get lost ask anyone where the Deanery (it's a school) is and the Pear Tree is opposite. The Pear Tree has great proper beer and you can walk to the ground from there. If you want even more local to the ground you could try the Springfield which is where their old ground used to be. Don't park on the Asda or Robin Park Shopping car parks, they'll clamp you. If you want a pie, go to Waterfields or Greenalgh's. Pooles are rubbish now.
Guest Kev Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Scall, Going by car probably, where's the best place to park ?
Gunga Din Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 in and out job i think. the place is a s*** hole
Scally Bob Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Scall, Going by car probably, where's the best place to park ?You can park in the streets near where Springfield Park used to be and it's a short walk (over the canal bridge) to the ground. You can also park near the Orwell and walk along the canal. Don't go on the big car parks near the JJB Soccerdome because it's a nightmare getting out. When I come home from night matches at Anfield they are still queueing to get off them! Two places to try and avoid are Scot Lane-that's the road at the side of the JJB Stadium-because it can't cope with the traffic and the big roundabout near Asda because it looks like Stevie Wonder designed it. in and out job i think. the place is a s*** holeHave you been? If you know where to go it's fine.

Gunga Din Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Have you been? If you know where to go it's fine. i've been the ground. it s just a lego land stadium in an industrial estate
Guest Kev Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 The Cherry Tree sounds like a plan...Wigan is alright Now then, is that the PEAR TREE or CHERRY GARDENS ?

Guest Kev Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Greenhalghs pies are rubbish I used to love them Used to
Sara Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 We're going. Our mate has an uncle who lives over there so I don't know which pub he'll be taking us in yet.
matty Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 The Cherry Tree sounds like a plan...Wigan is alright Traitor.
Scally Bob Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I forgot to mention that Pauline who runs the Cherry Gardens, is the sister of the landlady of the Albert and a big Reds fan. Pooles Pies went downhill when Whelan bought them out and started using cheaper ingredients.
smicer07 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Anyone know how far it is from Wigan train station to the JJB? Is it walkable?
jon_hall Posted February 7, 2006 Author Posted February 7, 2006 Yes very walkable. You can see it from the train on the way in irregardless of which station you arrive (both on same street anyway)
Guest Kev Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Struggling now whether to get the train or drive
jon_hall Posted February 7, 2006 Author Posted February 7, 2006 Struggling now whether to get the train or drive Can you drink?
