Guest PaulMcC Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 We need a new left back. When they scored yesterday i turned to my mate and said i bet left back played him onside. The other 3 players at the back nearly always step up in time and get it spot on(apart from Hyypia for that disallowed goal yeaterday), while the left back is nearly always the deepest of the back 4 and plays on the opposition attackers. I don't think any left back at the club is good enough defensively to be the long term solution for the position.
Flight Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 I agree with you mate and I've been saying it for a long time. LB, RM and 2 strikers needed 9hopefully Robbie will be one), as was obvious from last nights game. Bottom line, we deserved nothing out of the game because we couldn't score and we messed up defensively.
matty Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Agree entirely. Don't think any of our LBs are good enough. Riise too one-footed and not great going back, Warnock and Traore just not good enough full stop.
Rushian Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Play Riise there every week. We've barely conceded a goal with him as leftback this season.
Guest PaulMcC Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 I'm struggling to think of good left back who would be available tho. Evra wa smeant to be a goo dplayer and one of the best available but he looks very average for the Mancs. His crossing has been bad and his defensive play has been dodgy as well. Who would you suggets to get in?
Flight Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 (edited) Play Riise there every week. We've barely conceded a goal with him as leftback this season. He's only played there a half dozen times though mate and only against weak times and only at home. Got to think that if he was good enough Rafa would have played him more, against tougher opposition and away. Warnock has played in more clean sheets than Riise, but he obviously isn't the long term solution either. Edited February 6, 2006 by Flight

If we put Riise up for sale there'd be a stampede for his services. He is simply the best left back we have by a country mile and on form this season the best in the league. Think Rafa is making a huge mistake f***ing about with the position - it's certainly not helping Warnock or Traore. He may be a great manager, but he doesn't get everything right ....

Though maybe Riise needs a rest sometimes (though obv not yesterday)?
Kenny_ Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 I think Rafa will address this issue in the summer. Atm we're alright I think. A new centreback was more vital now in Jan than lb and Rafa was right in spending the money on Agger. Riise is for me the best option now. Think Traore will be off in the summer. Not so sure about Warnock, a decent cover but if we're getting a new lb in the summer, how many lb's do we need in total?

He may be a great manager, but he doesn't get everything right .... Now that I agree with totally. We need someone playing LB in most/all games the way Finnan covers RB. Not Rafas fault though, I don't think. We just don't have the squad that we need, yet.
bazz Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 If krompkamp becomes the player Rafa think he is, then maybe he will end up at right back and Finnan will move to left back. Has been done before and may be done again? Prefer a new LB myself though and for the rest of the season, get Riise back there.

Finnan would be brilliant defensively on th eleft but i think we'd lose a bit of his attacking play if he played on th eleft. He'd have to keep trying to get the ball on to his right foot to cross it in even tho is left foot is pretty good as well.
alias75 Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Agree we need to play Riise there for the vast majority of games. When Gonzalez finally joins at least that gives us 2 out and out left wingers so there will be less need to play Riise there. Warnock is always committed but i dont think hes good enough. He gives the ball away too much and often isnt in line with the rest of the defence. We have conceded probabaly 3 or 4 goals because Warnock has been playing someone onside. Cant think of many players we could sign at the moment for that position but im sure there are some solid options out there.
meepins Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 (edited) The reason JAR was playing midfield and not left back was due to the strategy implemented by Benetiz.I'm sure he was aware of the absolute mess their pitch is in and the intention of Chelsea to nullify our passing game through a physically strong tough tackling midfield.I doubt we will see Warnock at left back until Rafa wants to rest Riise or he is injuried.Individual errors costs us the game, although Crespos goal was a good piece of skill. Mikey Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Wayne Bridge - great LB. And I think Rafa played Warnock LB to fit HK in 'up front'. If Zenden was fit or Gonsalez available he would probably have kept JAR there most of the season.
Guest Kev Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Would it be better if Carra was moved back there and give Agger a shout alongside Hyypia ?
Boca Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Warnock is certainly not up to it, as yesterday proved again. he was lucky to get away with a mistake that let Cole in in the first half as well as the error for their second. Bridge would have been ideal, but the chavs would probably block any move we made for him.
Andy-oh-six Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Would it be better if Carra was moved back there and give Agger a shout alongside Hyypia ? What about blooding Agger at left back? he looks very comfortable on the ball. Can't see either option working but I can see Warnock and Djimi leaving in the summer with someone else coming in to provide JAR with competition.
