iPod Video

What's the best way of getting stuff into the format (.MP4?) which is needed to play video on an iPod?

 

I've got this dodgy-ish shareware thing which converts an MPEG successfully but it only allows up to 3 minutes or so recording time until you pay for it. Seems a bit unstable/crap as well so I'm reluctant to do so.

 

Is it possible to convert actuall DVDs (i.e. ones I own) to the iPod format -in full or in part?
