Corners

I believe Steve Finnan should be taking them. I actually think he's good enough to take them with either foot, swinging it in from both sides.

 

Gerrard and Alonso both put the ocassional great dead ball in, but also a lot of crap considering how well both players pass the ball in open play.

 

Finnan for me is far and away the best crosser of a ball in the squad. He crosses consistently well with both feet, and his dead balls from deep are spot-on. Watch the goals we've scored this season from crosses into the area, and more often than not its his delivery.

 

We've got plenty of height, to me it's important we make the most of our set-pieces and at present we aren't.

I agree that Finnan could take them but it then asks the question who do you leave back ? If Kewell is on the pitch should he not take them ?

 

I've never liked Gerrard taking them because he's not that good anyway, is pretty good in the air and could also be better placed on the edge of the area.

Just as I finished posting I actually thought about that; personally I would leave the left-back, whoever that may be, and Carragher on the half-way line.

 

Carra is a magnificent defender and I love the guy, but lets face it since he scored on his debut from a corner, he's very unthreatening indeed. Ideally he'd still go up, but I'd rather have quality from set-pieces and him not in there.

 

There are plenty of players who carry a much greater threat, and the added bonus is our best defender is back in case the opposition break out.

 

Of course a lot of teams these days defend with all 11 men, in which case Carra could still go...

Have we scored at all this season from corners?

From the top of my mind, I can't remember one goal scored from corners this season.

 

Even though Steve G. is a great player, he should be right outside the box and take care of any clearances coming his way.

Does he deside to take'em himself, or is it Rafa who desides who to take the corners?

Gerrard is actually a decent aerial threat as well - he'd be better in the box.

Didn't there used to be an LFC fanzine called "another wasted corner" in the 80's. Apart from a brief spell under Houllier we've always been crap at taking corners from what I remember.

And why do the fans get all excited when we do get a corner? We never score from them so what's the big deal. In fact, we are more in danger of conceding ourselves from one of our own corners. Still, I remember a time in the late 70s/early 80s when we'd missed about 7 penalties on the bounce. During one game in the middle of that spell, the ball hit Viv Anderson on the arm and he was right in front of the Kop and the ball went out of play. Even though it was a blatant hand-ball, the immediate shout from the Kop was, "Corner!!!"

I've noticed too many of corners being caught cleanly by keepers, lately. That suggests that there is not enough pressure being put on them.

I hate the short corners we have started to do. One on Wednesday night was a total f***up, played short to JAR then back to Stevie who tried to pass it to the edge of the box which got intercepted and then they were on the break... when we have all that height in the box we should exploit it... the amount of times Sami slips through unmarked as well...

Problem is part delivery part players in the box. I agree that we need more variety and Finnan is an interesting option. We also need more players capable of scoring from these crosses. Sami hasn't scored since Fulham last year from a set piece too. Maybe Agger will help when it comes to scoring from set pieces.

I agree - it's not just the delivery but movement off the ball that i think is poor. It's the same on crosses and free-kicks. Everything looks very predictable.

And one thing i've noticed about when opponents mark up against us is that they rarely have their best player in the air up against Sami. Usually someone who can just mark him and block him off.

And as Leo says, Carra going up for a set piece is like sending Graham Norton to Spearmint Rhino's.

Im starting to wonder if we practice set pieces especially corners?.If so surely Rafa must have see the types of deliveries...or woeful deliveries for corners?.

when rafa first came we were very inventive at set pieces. We peaked against Leverkusen at home but the ref and linos were thinking quickly enough and we got done for the cleverest corner ever.

That move was class. Too bad the ref ordered to be retaken. I would like to see us try it again sometime. Preferably against a team who didn't watch that match. Oh and let the ref know about it in advance.
