Reina's Save Last Night...

...from Heskey's point-blank header last night was one of the best I've seen 'live'.

 

He had moved to come for the cross, but as it swung away and the ball came to Heskey just 5 yards out, he had to adjust his footing and fling himself across the goal to push it wide.

 

Even then he had to have strong hands to get enough purchase on it to divert the ball round the post, and Heskey had plenty of power in the header.

 

Only topped for me by Schmeichel's save for City from Diouf in his last season.

 

Brilliant Pepe lad - forgotten a bit now because of what happened after, but by all rights should have been a match-winning save. 23 years old? What a keeper he is going to be if he's this good at such a young age for his position.

it was a fantastic save... unbelievable in fact. But yeah it was a shame what happened after it. He very nearly got to Ferdinands last week too, his fingertips touched it and bearing in mind the placement of that header and the speed of it it was pretty remarkable that he got anywhere near it. Anyone see that ball he played out to Kewell in the 2nd half. It was a little chip ball to the halfway line which resembled the sort that Stevie or Xabi would be proud of. Kewell didn't have to move to get it.

Was unlucky with Ferdinands last week. Did get a good touch on it, Just too quick too far in the corner.

he's brilliant not only his saves his reactions and his positioning, but also his judgement in where the shot is going to go.

Hmm, I think this save is been buit up a bit. It was a very good reaction to get his hands up but he did not have to fling himself to the right or the left. It was just a very small bit to the side of him. He did very well to push it around the post and not just parry it back in the midle of the penalty area, but it was more a bad miss by Heskey then a world class save. had it 2-3 feet either side of Reina then there is nothing he, or anyone in the world, could have done about it.

 

He is however a great 'keeper and the save, well almost save, that really impressed me was for Ferdinands goal against us the week before. How he even managed to get his hand to that ball was utterly amazing. I have never seen a keeper spring so well. Just a crying shame he couldn't get a bit more of a hand on to it as it would have rivalled Banks much replayed save.

I'm not sure Xabi could have done a lot else really, it was right at that awkward height, he couldn't have risked leaving it and Pepe almost kept it out but it was just too close to goal. Terrible goal to concede nonetheless.

That is a short summation, but one i agree with. I haven't seen last nights save but he has made a few very good saves over the last 6-8 weeks but i still here commentators and even the odd fan saying he hasn't been tested. Well i agree he hasnt been tested a lot (thankfully) but when he has he has shown amazing reflexes. His effort to save Ferdinands header was world class and a veruy good example of his reactions and judgement as i doubt many others would of moved.

 

Having said that Van der Sar's save today was out of this world. Even better when he missed the follow up

Whilst i thought it was a very good save, i thought Taylor made a better one from Xabi's free-kick. Reina had to react very quickly but the header was pretty much straight at him and although Taylor had more time and was able to position himself in preparation for Xabi's shot, it was still a very well hit freekick that should have gone in.

 

A better example of Pepe's save was Seaman in the FA Cup Semi against Sheff Utd. Peschisolido is still sat there wondering how it didn't go in. And Schmeichel's career is festooned with saves like that.

 

Pepe is brilliant, though.

For the goal, it looked to me like Heskey's header down could have been comfortably collected By Reina but Alonso was in the way so he left it for him to avoid bumping into each other. Then Xabi was caught in two minds and tried to chest it back to pepe but knocked it past him instead.

 

Anyone else get a view of it?

Xabi was too casual all night and that was the icing on the cake, he tried to chest it down to his feet so he could bring it out but it bounced to hard off him. What he should have do was just blocked the ball with his chest (facing away from the goal) and hoped to hack away the ball as it dropped.

Casual, what game did you watch?

 

He tried to chest it back to the keeper, but as he did reiner had allready called and gone for it. Wouldnt say xabi was casual "all night" as hed not been on the pitch for that long, and after that happend he was our most passionate player, sprinting all over the place to get the ball whenever it went out of play.

 

As for the save, i thought it was fantastic, and all around me in the annie road jumped up and cheerd as if we had scored when he made that save.
