Leo No.8 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 (edited) Absolutely superb last night - his delivery caused us no end of problems; I've rarely seen a player cross the ball into dangerous areas so consistently. I don't think I can remember him putting a single bad ball in, and when the goal eventually came it was following his cross. He worked hard as well - wasn't just poncing about as some players with his quality feel they have the right to, he ran his balls off for his team. I'd love to see us sign him in the summer and last night was the clincher for me. The main thing is he seems to have sorted that attitude out; he has the demeanour of a lad who has got his head down now. Yes he had a little strop in the corner, but I like to see that kind of passion from a player. I'd probably put him as my number one choice to solve our right midfield problems; if Brum go down we'd probably get him cut price as well. I'd love to see him and the re-born Harry Kewell operating down each wing. Hope my mate is right and he's coming in the summer. Apparently we've got first refusal following the dicussions recently, and we're his first choice. Edited February 2, 2006 by Leo No.8
cestrianred Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Agree in full Leo-he was excellent.Pity about the dicks in the Centenary stand singing about his jail link-great way to help the deal.

Apparently we've got first refusal following the dicussions recently, and we're his first choice. Hope your mate is right too, oddly enough I think the display of loyalty my Pennant in wanting to repay Steve Bruce shows an increasing maturity and has raised his stock in my eyes I know we need him now, but the extra 6 month wait could be a good thing, in that it will allay fears regarding his drinking and demonstrate if he can do it over a full season If Anderson is ready to play a bit part next season then Pennant and Anderson could go a long way to solving the RW problem and allow us to spend more money on getting the right strikers Looking forward to Pennant arriving in the summer

Yeah - I was thinking exactly the same thing! Fortunately he is a dyed-in-the-wool Red, so hopefully it won't make too much difference.
beejay Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 The cross for the goal was top, top class. Pennant was very impressive and on last night's performance must have made an impression on rafa. The little b******
Elisha_Scott Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 He was very good, but needs to get on the weights. If Harry Kewell is bullying you, you're in trouble!
Guest AdamS Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 He was excellent. His delivery would have strikers salivating.
Stew F Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Agree. Pennant looks the real deal at the moment, he's quick, not scared to take players on and can put some killer balls in the box. We are desperate for a player to take the responsibility of dead ball deliveries off SG, one because we waste an awful lot of corners etc. but also because we need Stevie in the middle rucking and on the end of the crosses. I wonder if his good display was an attempt to impress his future manager
Elisha_Scott Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Also, Rafa rates him, but is worried about his off the field stuff, understandable.
Magic8Ball Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Also, Rafa rates him, but is worried about his off the field stuff, understandable.see my post above - I think we really need to move for Pennant
Jimi Rojo Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I noticed Kewell and Riise were throwing him around with ease. Despite that his contribution was good, but he could definitely beef up a bit.
Leo No.8 Posted February 2, 2006 Author Posted February 2, 2006 He reminds me of Beckham when he used to play on the right for United, in that although he is capable of going past his man, he doesn't actually need to his delivery is that good. He can bend the ball round the full-back and right into the danger area without actually having to get to the byeline. Crouchy must have been watching the balls he was putting into the area with some admiration. Not suprised of Rafa's view on the lad - I think we all feel the same way, worried about if we signed him would he go off the rails again. I think the boss would have to meet him, talk things through and be convinced, but last night he must have been very impressed indeed...
Guest JV Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 He was very good, but needs to get on the weights. If Harry Kewell is bullying you, you're in trouble!Loved it when kewell knocked him off the ball Good, young, English and cheap, he would deffo be a good addition.

I have got a horrible feeling that, in the summer, we will decide to move for him, but so will plenty of others, and with Brum looking like they might stay up, they can do some hard bargaining. It could get messy, fingers crossed we just get him signed sharpish though.
Ronnie Whelan Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 (edited) He was very good, but needs to get on the weights. If Harry Kewell is bullying you, you're in trouble! Very true, but this is something that can be worked on. As already mentioned he has showed some maturity in sticking with a struggling side, repaying them for the loyalty they showed him during his hard time. By the way Elisha, has anything been mentioned to you about us actually having held talks with Pennant and his advisors? Edited February 2, 2006 by Ronnie Whelan

No, only thing I know is, he was coming here on a free until the jail thing. Gutted we never got him
KD07 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Would absolutely love to have the lad playing for us. Genuine talent and an excellent winger. Though he almost lost his head there, almost snapping the corner flag after getting shoulder charged by Riise.
Ronnie Whelan Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 No, only thing I know is, he was coming here on a free until the jail thing. Gutted we never got him Thanks for that. Im an eternal optimist so to take something positive from that you could say that he had agreed to come here which would bode well for future negotiations.
Eiler99 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Really impressed with his crossing. Caused us lots of problems. He can join Fowler in the gym though - not quite strong enough.
Barnesy_10 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 (edited) he was top quality last night. Very impressed with him. Very lightweight though but his skill on the ball makes up for that. Some amazing crosses from the lad, he would work wonders on our right wing. Edited February 2, 2006 by Barnesy_10
Owen1978 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 (edited) So does everyone think that Pennent is rafa's No.1 right wing target, i really dont fancy simao for the wing as he doesnt play that position week in week out. I think once Speedy comes he will have the left wing and Pennent on the right, that leaves Kewell in the second striker role, which is his preffered position as he has stated on several occasions, which will suit him with his guile and will allow him to get some shots on goal with his left foot! And then with Xabi & Stevie patrolling midfield, it all gets a bit pants wetting!!! EDIT Still think we need a striker unless fowler hits it off! Edited February 2, 2006 by Owen1978
ricflairandy Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Yeah - I was thinking exactly the same thing! Fortunately he is a dyed-in-the-wool Red, so hopefully it won't make too much difference. It wasnt "dicks" in the centenery stand, it was teh whole ground. But he laughed about it which i thought was quite professional of him. Hope we get him in the summer.

We deffo need a striker or 2 in the summer.
